Shirley Roberts Obituary
Shirley Mae Roberts, 81, a courageous, compassionate, and fiercely determined soul, passed away on October 8, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of strength, love, and unforgettable charm.
Born on August 9, 1944, in Portland, Oregon, Shirley was the beloved daughter of the late Paul and Lillian Dickerson. She was also preceded in death by her husbands, Ronald A. Roberts, of 32 years; and most recently, Norman L. Morris; as well as her sister, Dolores.
Shirley is survived by her son, Scott Graves (Doris); a daughter, Sherry Graves; two granddaughters, Sherri Graves Roberts (Dustin), Kelly Graves (John); grandson Shaun Barbour; and great granddaughter, Harper. She is also survived by two brothers, Guy "Sonny" Batten, Jr and Stan Batten (Pat); as well as a sister, Sharon Ormsby; and numerous nieces and nephews.
To know Shirley was to know someone who never took "no" for an answer. She challenged limits, broke through barriers, and proved time and again that she could accomplish anything she set her mind to.
A proud and respected woman, Shirley lived a vibrant life rooted in the heart of Charlottesville, where she built a meaningful career at the University of Virginia doing what she loved: interior design. Her eye for beauty, passion for detail, and creative spirit brought warmth and style to every space she touched. She was exceptionally good at what she did, and she was proud of it, as she should have been.
But more than anything, Shirley loved her family. Her devotion to them was unwavering and deep. She also shared her heart generously with friends who became like family. And while nothing surpassed her love for her loved ones, she did have a soft spot for Vince Gill's voice and the scent of fresh leather in a new Lexus, always with a sparkle in her eye and a laugh that made you feel right at home.
Shirley was a woman of deep faith who treasured her close relationship with God. She was a longtime member of Northside Baptist Church and, more recently, a member of Belmont Baptist Church.
Shirley's presence lit up every room. She was confident, kind, and full of life, the kind of person whose name brings a smile, and whose memory will continue to inspire those lucky enough to have known her. She will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever celebrated.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to Shirley's devoted caregivers, Tysheka Cooper, Khimora Cooper, Samirah Cooper, Sylvia Anderson, Taneesha Anderson, and special niece Melissa Batten.
Services for Shirley will be held on Monday, October 13, 2025 at 11:00am at Hill and Wood Chapel, 1st & Market Street, officiated by Rev. William M. Templeton. Burial will follow at Monticello Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
