Diane Shaffer, 78, of DeKalb, Illinois, died peacefully on May 17, 2021, at Pine Acres in DeKalb.
Diane was born on April 21, 1943, in Chicago, Illinois. She was the daughter of Julius and Eleanor (Barauskas) Militz. She married John Clifford Shaffer on October 1, 1966, in Chicago, Illinois. John and Diane were married for 51 years.
Diane graduated from Lindblom High School in 1960 and she went on to receive her Bachelor of the Arts degree in Art History from Northern Illinois University. Diane worked at the Illinois Institute of Technology, at Northern Illinois University, and at Castle Bank. Most prominently, she was the long-time director of Grant North Residence Halls at NIU. Diane was a great mother and wife who always supported her children and their own various interests. She deeply loved her grandchildren and her grandchildren adored her in turn. Diane was exceptionally creative, and she enjoyed exploring history, music, food, literature, and art. She was an accomplished painter, and she sewed and collected antique jewelry as well. John and Diane travelled the world and throughout the United States together. They loved exploring antique stores, interesting restaurants, and museums. Most importantly, Diane loved people. She had many good friends in DeKalb, including at the local YMCA where she loved to swim. She also supported the community through Beta Sigma Phiand other service organizations. Diane will be immensely missed by her children, her grandchildren, and her many friends. Her children and grandchildren will remember her unwavering support and laughing with her. She lived a full and interesting life with John, focused on lifelong learning and exploration of new ideas and places. Diane attended the First Lutheran Church of DeKalb.
Diane is survived by her children, James P. (Marybeth Langer) Shaffer, Michael J. (Emily) Shaffer; two grandchildren, Emma M. and Jarek M. Shaffer.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, John.
Services will be held at a laterdate.
