James Barrowman Obituary

James H. BarroWMAN

Born: Sept. 17, 1920; in Bristol, PA

Died: Oct. 11, 2014; in DeKalb, IL

James H. Barrowman, age 94, of DeKalb, passed away Saturday, October 11, 2014, at Oak Crest DeKalb Area Retirement Center, DeKalb, after an extended decline in health.

Born September 17, 1920, in Bristol, Pennsylvania, the son of James and Sarah (McGuire) Barrowman, Jim spent his early life in Yonkers, New York, where he graduated from Gorton High School. During World War II, he served the United States Army in the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions. Following the war, Jim became a machinist for National Cash Register in New York City. Jim participated in the Boy Scouts of America, the Scottish Society of Clan MacGregor, and the Diamond Thistle Lodge No.555 of the The Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of the State of New York.

On Sept. 5, 1945, Jim married Mary "May" Webster and together they raised four children, Glenn (Mary) Barrowman of Florissant, Colorado, Margie (Ron) Sanford of Cedar Grove, Wisconsin, Jean (Dan) Pfaff of Columbus, Indiana, and Carol (Paul) VanderWeide of Sycamore. Living in several locations, Yonkers, New York, Ocean City, New Jersey, Whiting, New Jersey, and Lafayette, Indiana, Jim enjoyed being an active member of Presbyterian and Reformed churches.

Jim was passionate about sailing on Long Island Sound, camping in the Adirondack Mountains, crafting and reading. But nothing gave Jim more joy than time with his family. Jim will be most remembered for his sense of humor, his perseverance through adversity, and his gentle and humble spirit.

He will be missed by his wife, May; his four children; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; his brother, Roy (Catherine) of Helena, Montana; and the staff of Oak Crest, who became "like family" during the past three years.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, John; and sister, Helen.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, November 8, 2014, at DeKalb Area Retirement Center Oak Crest Chapel.

My thoughts and prayers and love extend to the entire family in the passing of my Uncle Jimmy. He was a man to be admired, with such courage as well as sense of humor.
He lost his finger, but never his Faith. He always knew that while suffering and pain are real and ongoing in this fallen world, they will not have the final word. God Bless your soul and all those you love Uncle Jimmy. First the pain and now the Glory. Until we see you again may your Home Coming be as wonderful as you were. Love always Joan Webster Maybury
