Paul Neuman Obituary

Paul Neuman

Born: Feb. 17, 1927; in Heiligenthal, East Prussia, Germany

Died: April 10, 2015; in Sycamore, IL

Paul Neuman, age 88, formerly of Freeport, passed away at his home in Sycamore, on Friday April 10, 2015, after a brief illness.

He was born February 17, 1927, in Heiligenthal, East Prussia, Germany to Robert Neumann and Martha Berg. He married Elfriede Danklefsen on May 25, 1947, in Koldenbuettel Germany. They immigrated to the United States in 1950, and settled in Chicago.

He was drafted into the Marine Corps during the Korean conflict, and after his honorable discharge, went to night school under the GI Bill, and was trained to become a tool and die maker. He worked for a number of tool and die companies in Chicago, before moving his family to Freeport in 1963. He continued in his trade until he retired in 1989, and after many active years, he and his wife moved to Sycamore in 2013, to be closer to family.

He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS).

He is survived by his wife of almost 68 years, Elfriede; as well as his sons, Paul (Sharon) of Sycamore, Illinois and David (Renee) of Carpentersville, Illinois; and a daughter, Rebecca Kunz (Jay) of Seaside, California; 13 grand-children and 8 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father; brother, Leo; and sister, Luzia, who died during World War II; his mother; as well as his younger sister, Monika Behling of Atlanta, Georgia.

A viewing will be held at the Burke Tubbs Funeral Home in Freeport, Illinois, on Friday, April 17, 2015, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. On Saturday, April 18th, there will be a viewing from 10:00 a.m. to 10:40 a.m., at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1716 S. Forest Rd., Freeport, Illinois. The funeral service will follow at 11:00 a.m., with Bishop Jeff Sands officiating.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in his name for the LDS Humanitarian Fund.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Thornton, Dr. Olea, the nurses at Kishwaukee Hospital and the wonderful staff at Bethany Rehab for their kindness and excellent care.

Paul was one of my dearest friends. I think often of his goodness and compassion. My wife and I miss him and his precious wife greatly.

Paul was one of our dearest friends. When we talk about Paul we cannot separate him from his loving wife, Elfrieda. He and Elfrieda have been wonderful exemplars of the attributes of Jesus Christ that we all hope to acquire and share. Not only do they possess unshakeable testimonies of Jesus Christ and the Gospel of the Restoration, but they lived it daily. They always made you feel welcome in their presence. It brings tears to my eyes as I recall the many hours we have shared together, both as friends as as servants of our Savior. Paul, our lives have been enriched immeasurably through having known you. Our loss, which is profound, is Heaven's gain.

In your time of grief, may the Neuman family lean on God's sustaining strength and courage. HE alone can comfort our sad and sorrowing hearts when someone we love dies, continue to trust and hope in him.
( Psalm 147:3)

Dear Family, I started working at Ar-Dee in 1974 so I had the pleasure of knowing Paul. What a kind, quiet, intelligent man who was friends with my stepdad, Howard Strodtman. Deepest sympathy to all of you with the utmost respect. Bea Smiley Patrick

Paul was known as a friend to several widows in the church congregation. When they had a problem or worry they called him and he would go to their home and help them with their concern as if they were his own family. He quietly did this for many years. He was so kind to them and trusted by them so that more than one gave him legal power to take care of their affairs and finances as their needs increased in their older years.

Dear Sycamore Neuman Family, my family only briefly knew Paul but he had such a nice presence and spirit. We send condolences and hope that we can be of comfort to all of you in your time of need. Your own good examples and meaningful lives are a nice legacy of his benevolent influence. Wishing you Peace. Jon & Family
