RICARDO CALDERON Obituary

DeKALB – Ricardo Allen "Rick" "Rator" Calderon, 59, of DeKalb, Ill., passed away Wednesday, May 1, 2013, at home, following a long illness.

Born Jan. 2, 1954, in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of Casper John and Josephine Marguerite (Wacker) Calderon, Rick spent his high school years in Mexico City, where his father was employed. He then attended Arizona State University in Tempe, Ariz., starting in 1972. After spending several years in the Phoenix Valley area working at a record store, he moved to DeKalb in 1978.

He graduated from Northern Illinois University in 1982, and was employed at NIU in Instructional Communications as a technical operator until he retired in 2008. While at NIU, he was active in designing, installing and maintaining audio/visual systems around the campus. He was known as "The Sound Guy."

In 2005, NIU football coach Joe Novak credited Rick with being an important part of NIU's MAC title win by assisting in preparing the team by creating a 94-decibel sound level at the stadium during practice, to prepare players for the deafening crowd sound and chaos that they would need to endure and deal with in order to win. He was the holder of two patents for computer installed stereo PA amplifier cards.

Rick was a very active member of the DeKalb community since arriving in 1978. He created and participated in many music ensembles and performances both as a musician and as an engineer. He created Punto Cinco, an alternative music space in downtown DeKalb, which presented live concerts and performances.

Rick served as the audio engineer for the DeKalb Municipal Band for many years, assisting Dee Palmer in presenting seasons of summer concerts. He was a basketball fanatic and played at least three times weekly until very recently. A favorite quote when asked about keeping up with younger, faster players was, "They can't go to their left."

Rick's favorite mode of transportation was his feet, walking daily to and from work at the university, to his friends' houses and to the local establishments. When further distances were covered, he would take his bicycle.

Rick was a friend, companion and helper to many, and would always be there when his assistance was needed. For the last several years of his father's life, Rick would frequently travel to Texas to assist with transporting his father to his dialysis appointments and assisting his mother. When one of his friends in DeKalb became terminally ill, he drove him to appointments in Chicago, visited and stayed with him during his hospital stays, and assisted him at home. Rick was a fixture in DeKalb, and his presence will be missed.

He is survived by his mother, Josephine (Wacker) Calderon of San Antonio, Texas; brother, John Calderon of Redmond, Ore.; sister, Marguerite Calderon (Steven) Bailey of Wilmington, Del., and her daughters, Megan (Richard) Stevenson of Wilmington and their children Tucker and Bailey, Kelly (Keith) Counsellor of Smyrna, Del., and their children Amber and Jordan, and Kristen Mans of Macon, Ga., and her children Alexa, Madeline and Nickolaus; and several aunts and uncles.

Rick was preceded in death by his father, Casper Calderon.

The memorial service will be at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 8, at Anderson Funeral Home, DeKalb, with the Rev. Ray Krueger officiating. The visitation will be from 3 to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday. Cremation will follow services at Anderson Funeral Home Crematory.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Ricardo Allen "Rick" "Rator" Calderon Memorial Fund, sent in care of Anderson Funeral Home, P.O. Box 605, 2011 S. Fourth St., DeKalb, IL 60115.

I just found out yesterday of Rick's passing and it hit me hard. One wonders why people of his caliber have to depart this earth at such an early age? I can only think God had plans for him - important ones.
I met Rick through his brother, who dated my younger sister in high school. We would get together when he came to San Antonio and kept in touch off and on. Knowing Rick was one of the more fun, interesting, happy experiences in my life… I often wished he had lived closer. I, of course, loved his wit, but he was also a very handsome guy! His taste in music was wide-ranging and eclectic; one of the things we had in common. He was the most faithful letter-writer I've ever known and I loved his post cards with those often way-out drawings!

Around 1999, a couple of years after my divorce, I got back in touch with Rick. He came to see us not long after, again when he was staying with his parents. He was a good uncle to my 2 girls when they were smaller. He would usually bring them a gift which they loved. I remember once we went to the Retama race track and had a lot of fun there. During our visits he would often take us out to eat, being the generous person that he was. I have a picture somewhere of one of my girls hanging onto his leg like a barnacle, telling him not to go when it was time for him to leave. Well, I feel that way now. I wished I'd kept in touch; didn't even know he was sick.

The last time he came to see me he was going to soon retire from NIU. I remember getting him a DVD of a Santana concert (a last-minute gift), hoping he would like it. The day he came I was to have a baby shower for my niece a bit later; before he left my mother and 3 sisters had arrived. As was his style, he volunteered to photograph all of us on the front porch for “posterity.” Those pictures reflected the effect his personality had on us, eliciting big grins from all.

Rick, you will so be missed. Bless you and your family.

I knew him as Rator. He was an early adopter of what we now call the fanny pack. His was leather.

Here's hoping he's encountered the divine Harry Castle on the other side.

I did not know Rator well. He was friend and mentor to my son Harry, and to me for a long time he was that tall, tall guy who Harry spoke so well of.

They met around 1984. - Harry was in graduate school studying computer science and music, but it was in the environment of Punto Cinco that he could experiment and learn the skills and ideas that would help him become who he was. Thank you, Rator.

Fast forward to 2009 - Rator didn't forget, he was again there for Harry, or rather Harry's family, as we planned his Memorial Celebration. Rator spent hours generously and enthusiastically helping me with a slideshow for the event. When he also agreed to speak at the event, I felt honored.

Over the years I have mostly seen Rator briefly on the street or on campus, and always I experienced a quick feeling of warmth and connection. Rator, my family and I will miss you.

I worked on campus for over 20 years and got to work with Rick and find out just how great a guy he was. Always up and a smile on his face. I trust that his family knows just how wonderful a man that he was and how much he will be missed. Thank you Rick for being the person that you were.

Rick ("Rator") was a true friend who I had the priveledge of spending a lot of time with. Whether it was listening to our fave bands on vinyl, watching videos (he loved Beta and was still watching X Files on Beta long after everyone switched to VHS!), or just hanging out at the local establishments, we always had a great time and a lot of laughs. He was always ready to help out in any way, and he did so quite a bit (whether fixing my ancient stereo system several times, or helping me on the technical end of things when recording some of my music). I'll miss him; he was a unique, wonderful person. God bless you, Rator!

Rick, the "sound guy," was indeed a sound guy -- sweet, kind, creative, witty, wise. My husband and I met Rick some time in the late '70's, and we loved him. When my husband was seriously ill, hospitalized in DeKalb or at Northwestern, Rick would be there -- and my husband, who never liked visitors, loved having him there.

Rock on, Rick. You're simply amazing.
