Dear family and friends of BM3 Chris Sommers, I am Master Chief Claudia Simpson and I was Chris’s “Doc” on the USCGC MACKINAW.
I just found a picture “old school film” with Chris and I on the ships bridge. Chris was a fantastic shipmate and a dear person. He had a great sense of humor and I considered him part of my CG family.
I feel as if Chris is an Angel and sending me a little good luck nudge from Heaven. I will be retiring after 30 years of service this summer. It is a lucky chance I received this notification on myCG email.
I have a few pictures I’d like to upload and share of Chris.
The CG lost another great Mackinaw sailor in the last year. Commander select Molly Waters maiden name Killian. Molly sailed with Chris and I and had a love for the Great Lakes. God Bless my awesome shipmates, till we meet again!! Love, Doc

Just wanted to say I miss you so much Christopher. I think about you everyday and wonder what your life would have been like if you were still here for years to come. I know you would have been an outstanding man and that is the way I remember you today. I am proud for what you stood for, and am proud to have been your mother. I can't wait to be with you someday and tell you how much I love you. I feel like a part of my heart and life is missing that I will never get back. I will cherish my memories of you close to my heart. Just know I will never forget the wonderful person you are and always will be! I love you son.

Happy Easter Christopher,
Just wanted you to know I am thinking of you today and everyday. I remember when you played Jesus Christ in "The Passion Play" at St. Judes Church. You were so good and I remember you carrying the cross up the aisle and to the center of the stage and being nailed to the cross. Now Jesus is carrying you until we meet again. I am so proud of you and what you accomplished in your short life here on earth. I love you so much and miss you even more. Until next time, may God keep you safe and surround you with his grace and never ending love.

March 21, 2007

To Christopher Clyde Sommers,

You were born for God and from two wonderful parents, Scott A. and Robin R. Voreis (Sommers).

Your great, great, great, great Grandma Bailey was Native American. You had Irish, Swiss, German, Dutch, English and very proud american ancestors. You were very patriotic to serve in the United States Coast Guard, serving your country.

I give your mother, Robin, the full credit for guiding you into the Coast Guard, a direction that caused you to take off running with the ball. This made you what you were. A polite young man, wanting to please everyone you came in contact with, and never having a stranger in your midst. A friend to everyone.

You could fly like an eagle, run like an antelope and swim like a fish when you were growing up. We always understood each others wit.

I met many thousands of people in my lifetime, and read about some outstanding human beings Chris, you were at the top of my list.

How proud we are to have known you. What a priviledge in life to have known such an outstanding, kind, considerate, intelligent and loving grandson.

You will always be in our hearts. I know you are especially watching over your mom and dad, your sister Jamie, and Grandpa and Grandma.

We will be looking forward to meeting and seeing you again at that happy hunting grounds in the sky.

Your life was valued on how you gave your all "My Hero"!

Love Ya,

Mom, Dad and Jamie

March 15, 2007

We have ordered you the most beautiful headstone Christopher, we know you would love it. We have the Coast Guard emblem and your high school picture etched in the top and the Mackinaw ship and the 2 boats at Calumet Harbor on it too. It is beautiful, just like you son. We love you so much and miss you even more. We will be with you again someday, our faith in God sustains us. You will always be our "Little Mr. Coast Guard."

Your loving mother

February 13, 2007

I think about you every single day Christopher. I love you so much and am so proud to be your mother. You gave of yourself to so many and your country and for that I am grateful. I will forever be proud of you and I can't wait till I see you again in heaven. Till then know that I will love you forever and ever till the end of time. All I ever wanted was a boy and a girl and God granted me that wish when I had you and Jamie. I thank him for the time I was given with you. I love you son, never forget that!

I give my deepest sympathy to the Sommers family for your loss. Chris is a good man and a hard working sailor who has a passion for his work. All of us on the Old Cutter Mackinaw and his fellow shipmates elsewhere will never forget Chris. May peace be with you my friend. Will you always shine your smile and passion for life down on all of us.

January 8, 2007

Dear Scott, Robin & Jamie,
You have my deepest sympathy for the loss of your wonderful son, your only brother and my only nephew. It is so sad to realize that we can no longer fill our lives with new news and events that Christopher would have undoubtedly made for us in years to come. I will however always remember the times I had with Chris in Wichita, Kansas playing with him as a child and later with vacations to Rawlins, Wyoming where I let Chris drive my car when he was only seven years old.
I am so proud of Christopher's accomplishments including those at Lincoln Way High School where he broke three records in swimming and in his career with the United States Coast Guard as an MB3 shipmate stationed at the Calumet Region of Northern Illinois. His desire to go to the TOP in the United States Coast Guard would have been realized without question after seeing his devotion, drive and motivation that made Chrisopher such a special person. Christopher, I will always be proud of you and remember you for the wonderful impressions you left with all the people you came in contact with in your life.

Love You,
From Your Uncle Jon

The thing I remember most about BM3 Sommers will be how he could always make me laugh and as an Ensign on my first tour out of the Academy, it was always appreciated. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to his shipmates. I will always remember his smile and his free spirit. Thanks for just being you Chris. =) And thanks for making my first tour one to remember!!

Ah that smile, a smile you could not say no to. I couldn’t count the times you would need a tool or some advice from the aux shop. I’d just have to drop what I was doing for you, no matter how busy I was. You were a good shipmate, thank you for sharing that smile with me.

December 20, 2006

Chris,
Your memory will live in my heart and all the people you have touched so deeply always. I remember your tall proud stature, your bright eyes and infectious smile, your loving, joking manner. I still see you in the Sickbay passageway squaring my Sickbay door in true boot camp fashion. I see you sitting in my chair in Sickbay saying "okay let's play a game, I'm the Chief and you are the BM3." You were always making me smile. I know how much Sarah, your family, your friends, your Shipmates and the Coast Guard meant to you. I think you broke the record for the amount of friends and family taken on a dependants cruise out of Chicago.
I saw the way you grew from the new kid on Deck Force to a very proud, knowledgeable, strong Bos'n Mate, who embraced the core values of Honor, Respect and Devotion to Duty.
I see your navigational stars............
And I know you are looking over us from above.
Peace be with the Loving Family, Friends and Shipmates of Christopher Sommers.
Love and Respect,
Doc

Wow...Where to start! I did not get to know you as well as I would have liked, but I did enjoy the times we did hang out. You were an awesome bowler and I had a blast with you and everyone we went out with. It was, and still is a special time that I will remember and cherish for a lifetime. You can replace just about anything in life, but you cant replace family and friends. And in the Coast Guard, your friends become your family. You can never be replaced. Please know you are missed and above all loved.

Even though I didn't know Chris that well, I knew people who did. They spoke very highly of him and it is a terrible shame that he was taken so early in his life.

December 18, 2006

As it turns out, we on MACKINAW were privliged to sail in the presence of a shooting star. Our sky was brightened whenever Chris was in it, with his smile and his positive outlook, and his love of life. We were privlidged to have his as a shipmate. None of us were ready for the star to disappear. So remember Chris whenever you see a shooting Star, a gift, a moment of true brigtness, up in the heavens.

Scott, Robin, and Jamie, I want to you know that I love you guys with all my heart and Chris was like my second brother. I'll always remember him coming through our garage door screaming some non-sense. I am glad that I had the chance to become close to the family and will never forget the times we had together. Chris was always someone I looked up to and I am proud of what he accomplished. He is still the greatest person I've ever known and will always be. I love you guys!!

Dearest Christopher,
The pain I am feeling can not be expressed in words. I am devastated by your passing. I am so proud to be your Grandmother and to have watched you grow into such a fine young man. I have so many memories of you that I will hold them all in a special place in my heart forever.

I found this poem today and I keep reading it thinking that you would say this to me and of course your Mom and Dad if you could.

Do not stand at my grave and weep. I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.

I am the sunlight on ripened grain. I am the Gentle autumn rain.

When you awaken in the mornings hush, I am the swift uplifting rush of quiet birds in circled flight, I am the soft stars that shine at night.

Do not stand at my grave and cry, I am not there, I did not die.

Hugs and Kisses to my Sweet Grandbaby Boy.

Robin,Scott & Jamie,
I know right now you have a huge hole in your hearts as I have. I will always cherish the memories of Chris at the Cabin hunting and of getting upset with the way he rode the snowmobiles only to get his infectious smile and laugh. Those memories I have will sustain me for as long as I am permitted to be in the flesh, then released to see Christopher again. The last time we were hunting and going to our stands he led the way, now he is leading the way and I know he is asking all of us to follow him.
Chris, we will always be there for your mother, father and Jamie.
You will always be #1 with me.
I Love You.

December 14, 2006

Our dear friends Scott, Robin & Jamie. We are heart broken to hear of your loss of Christopher. We know that because of you he became a fine man who chose a truly noble quest -- that of defending his country against it's enemies both foreign and domestic. We know that you could not have been more proud of him. We can only imagine how your hearts must hurt with the loss of Chris. Christopher will stand tall and proud in the presence of God as he did in the presence of man, of that we are sure. The strength of our Lord and the strength of character that you passed on to Chris is the same strength that you must now draw from to sustain your selves and endure the grief of your loss.
There is a loftier ambition than merely to stand high in the world. It is to stoop down and lift mankind a little higher. We know Christopher has been doing just that.
We hope you can take some comfort in the love we have for you.
God be kind to us all but give you special blessings at this painful time.

Love and God’s blessings for you

My thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time. I have so many memories of Chris. We used to play for hours and hours together and spent countless time between the two houses. Dear Robin, Scott and Jamie,
So many memories come to mind when I think of Chris. The little boy who had endless energy and loved to tease his sister. Our trips to Ft. Collins and him running and jumping into the pool. His death is so tragic and unfair. He seems to have become quite a wonderful young man with many accomplishments and endless friends. You must be so very proud of his service to the Coast Guard and the fine young man he became. Please take some comfort in knowing that God is guiding Chris now and looking out for him. I can't begin to express how sad Kenny and I are and how our hearts break for your loss. Our families were so close and Chris was such a big part of our lives when you lived here. Please know our prayers have been with you and your family.

For 2 and a half long years
This sailor has stood the watch

While some of us were in our bunks at night
This sailor stood the watch

While some of us were in school learning our trade
This shipmate stood the watch

In those years when the storm clouds of war were seen brewing on the horizen of history
This shipmate stood the watch

Many times he would cast an eye ashore and see his family standing there
Needing his guidance and help

Needing that hand to hold during those hard times
But he still stood the watch

He stood the watch so that we,
our families and our fellow countrymen could sleep soundly in safety, each and every night knowing that a sailor stood the watch.

Today we are here to say
Shipmate...the watch stands relieved

Relieved by those You learned from, trained, guided and led.
Shipmate you stand relieved....
We have the watch

My deepest sympathy to the family, friends and shipmates of Chris.

Chris,
Keep the other side of the bar safe for the rest of our families that have crossed.

To the Sommer family, I'm truly sorry for your loss. Chris worked for me on the Cutter Mackinaw and was one of my hardest workers. His positive attitude and hard work ethic was a shining example of what a Coastie should be. He always knew how to make everyone around him smile and laugh. Already I miss getting my weekly emails from him saying "DA BEARS WIN, LIONS SUCK". Him and I use to always argue who the better football team was.

To Chirs, I miss you and I know we'll see each other again some other day. You patrolled the rough and sometimes dangerous waters of the Great Lakes, now it's time for you to patrol the calm peaceful waters of Heaven. Good night my friend, sleep well and God bless you.

Sunset and evening star, And one clear call for me! And may there be no moaning of the bar, When I put out to sea, But such a tide as moving seems asleep, Too full for sound and foam, When that which drew from out the boundless deep Turns again home. Twilight and evening bell, And after that the dark! And may there be no sadness of farewell, When I embark; For though from out our bourne of Time and Place The flood may bear me far,I hope to see my Pilot face to face When I have crossed the bar.

Chis was one of the finest Petty Officer's that I have hade the pleasure to serve with. It made me proud the day I was able to call him Boatswain's Mate. My condolences go out to his family. He will truly be missed.

Shipmate, Friend, Brother; Fate and a little help from the Coast Guard made us shipmates when you were stationed aboard the USCGC MACKINAW. Your personality, positive attitude and desire to have a great time made us friends, but it was your kind heart and love for my children that earned you UNCLE status which made us brothers. The hours you spent with them playing games while babysitting to the snowmobile rides is time they will find unforgettable. You will always be in our thoughts.
Rest in peace BROTHER, your watch is over.

The memories I have of him will be cherished forever. Not only was Chris a great friend but he was a great person too. He will always be near and dear to my heart.

The greatest memory I will have of Chris is our trip to California or "Cali" as Chris would say. Chris, Ryan, and Matthew had the time of their lives surfing & enjoying their friendship. Chris was so polite, kind, & helpful while staying at my brothers' home. My family will still ask about Chris & I'd never have imagined this is the news I will have to share. I was so glad Chris stopped by the last time he was home. He was so proud of his career & looked so wonderful. I have no words to express my sorrow. The loss of a child brings the greatest loss. I pray for your strength to carry on. You raised a young man with strong character & integrity. Chris-you will always be in my heart. I am so grateful I shared part of your life.

My deepest sympathy and prayers go out to Chris's parents and sister. Chris was a good friend of my boyfriend's (Riley Winke). I've only known him since May, but he has made such an impact on my life in such a short amount of time. One of the sweetest guys I have ever met and probably ever will meet in my lifetime.

We love you Chris and you will forever hold a special part in our hearts,

Jenni Pfingston and Riley Winke
