TRAND Rev. Jonathan Paul Strand, age 27, entered Heaven on September 8, 2007 after a 2 year and 9 month struggle with brain cancer. Death has won no battle here, Jesus has won the Victory! Jon was the pastor of Hope Lutheran Church in Countryside, IL and was a 5th generation pastor. Son of Pastor Paul and C onnie (nee Dyer) Strand. Brother of Joshua L. Strand. Grandson of Rev. Ahlert and Dorothy Strand, Pat (Stan) Paul and the late Jerry Dyer. Also survived by 3 uncles, 2 aunts, 7 cousins and the extended families of the churches where Jon has served. Jon graduated with honors from Carl Sandburg High School, Orland Park in 1998. He graduated from Concordia University Chicago, summa cum laude in 2002 with a degree in Secondary Education, major in English and minor in Spanish. He helped start the Writing Center of the University. He graduated from Concordia Seminary of St. Louis, MO in 2006. He was ordained into the holy ministry on August 27, 2006. His father is the Senior Pastor at Trinity Lutheran Church, Tinley Park, IL. Jon did his vicarage at Faith Lutheran Church in Pierre, SD until he was diagnosed with cancer, then finished his vicarage at Trinity in Tinley Park. Jonathan was an avid Cubs fan, but while attending the seminary in St. Louis, MO he worked at Busch Stadium selling souvenirs, working during both of their recent World Series games. We thank our Lord Jesus for watching over Jon and allowing him to touch so many lives. To God be the Glory for what He has done. Paul, Connie and Josh--Jonathan is not gone to us; we forever keep him in our hearts. In the short time he was with us at Faith Lutheran, his gentle spirit and God-given talent touched everyone. Our prayers are for your comfort and strength as you carry on without him. We are confident that God in His great love for you will be with you at this difficult time. We smile a bit knowing that God is embracing this special child of yours and know that Heaven is a bit brighter because Jonathan is present. Please know what a precious gift you gave to us albeit such a brief time. God bless always!

Surely a new light shines in heaven. If these days of mourning that lie ahead seem filled with dark and gloom, then Pastor Jonathan will shine a light forward for us to see in this trek of loneliness without him. His brief life will make small things big again.

I believe that God looks down on the rest of us here on Earth and wonders why we are so saddened when he calls one of his faithful home to be with him. Sometimes I wonder if God doesn't want to say to us, "Look, Jon is very happy. He's here with me. Doesn't have a care in the world. Besides, I have important work for him here. If you only knew the enormous joy he feels since he's come home, your tears of sadness would quickly turn to tears of joy. He did not die. His soul will live forever -- here, with me."

Well, Jonathan, for those of us here on Earth whom you left behind, I say, "Congratulations! You fought the good fight and now victory is yours. Your best ministry is yet to be on the other side of heaven's shores."

We will all be saddened, for sure. For our loss. Your earthly death left a little hole in our hearts that will be empty because you are gone.

Pastor, Connie and Josh,
Jon played an enourmous part in the life of our family. We watched him grow from a small, nervous child into a man of God. Our family will always fondly remember and honor his life. Jon reminded us all that he is with Jesus. He is singing God's praises with Him.
We love your family as if we were members of your family. We are here for you....now and always.

Be Still

Be still like the grass on a melancholy summer day
Be still like desert shrub.

Be calm and you will hear your loved one speak, in the stillness, in the calm, their love resounds.

If you are still this promise I make, you will hear the voice of your loved one helping you along your way.

You Will Be missed

September 9, 2007

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.
