Alex Braiman MD

1926 - 2018

Alex Braiman, MD of Bernville, PA passed away peacefully at home on Saturday September 8, 2018 with his wife of 33 years, Camille Matthews, at his side. Age 92, he was born August 21, 1926 in Brooklyn, NY, the son of the late Isaac and Bessie Braiman. He was a veteran of WW11 having served in the Army Air Corps. He was a graduate of Brooklyn College (1946) and received his MA from Columbia University (1947) and MD from the State University of New York Downstate Medical College (1951).
Dr. Braiman was on the faculty of the University of Rochester Medical School, Department of Psychiatry from 1955-1970. He was a member of the team which developed the Biopsychosocial Model of Psychiatry. As a Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry from 1971 - 1996, he was Chief of the Education and Training Unit at the Rochester Psychiatric Center and was on the staff of the Strong Ties Community Psychiatry Program.
Upon his retirement from the University of Rochester in 1996, he and Camille moved to Farmington, New Mexico where he established a psychiatric practice and worked as a locum tenens psychiatrist in hospital and forensic settings throughout the Western states. In 2005 he received the Fifty Year Practice Medal from the American Psychiatric Association of which he was a life member.
In addition to his wife, Dr. Braiman is survived by 8 children, 1 stepdaughter, 21 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
