Frederik Meijer Obituary

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) — Frederik Meijer, who built the regional retail powerhouse Meijer Inc. while nurturing his lifelong love of the arts, died late Friday at a hospital in western Michigan. He was 91.

The billionaire passed away at the Spectrum Health System in Grand Rapids after suffering a stroke in his home early Friday morning, according to a statement issued by the company.

Meijer was credited with starting the supercenter store format in the 1960s that made Meijer a successful Midwest retailer. By 2009, Meijer had 180 of the giant stores throughout Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan and Ohio with annual sales of $15 billion.

He and his wife also gave millions of dollars to causes in the Grand Rapids area, and arts projects were major benefactors.

"The Meijer family thanks everyone for their thoughts and prayers and requests their privacy be respected at this difficult time," the company's statement said.

Meijer was 14 when his Dutch immigrant father, Hendrik, opened his first grocery store in Greenville in 1934 with $338.76 worth of merchandise purchased on credit. The younger Meijer worked 40 hours a week at the store throughout high school.

"We were hard up, and you know what? I didn't even feel deprived," he said in a 2002 interview. "I had a good time in the store, I was a decent student in school — I had a B-plus average."

Meijer and his father expanded their grocery operation in 1962 to include general merchandise, creating their first Thrifty Acres supercenter.

"I really enjoyed working with my dad till he died (in 1964, at age 80)," Meijer said. "We had a marvelous relationship."

The stores were renamed Meijer in 1984, and the company became one of the nation's largest family-owned retail businesses. Frederik Meijer was 82 before he took the title of chairman emeritus and began devoting less time to the company.

One of his three sons, Hank Meijer, previously said his father never thought he knew more than anyone else, so he trusted people to do their jobs and listened to the advice of others.

Meijer was born Dec. 7, 1919, in Greenville and in 1946 married Lena Rader after meeting her at the first Meijer store in Greenville, where she was a clerk. They spent their honeymoon visiting new stores.

The Meijers donated generously to programs in the Grand Rapids area through the foundation he established in 1990.

The Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park, a 125-acre botanical garden outside Grand Rapids, opened in 1995. A 30-acre sculpture park featuring two dozen works by important modern sculptors was added seven years later.

Meijer collected sculptures for years, filling a garage with statues of animals and people before he found a home for many of them in the botanical garden. Those pieces, placed throughout the garden, are separate from the works in the sculpture area.

His interest in the arts stemmed from his youth. Even in the hardest of times, his parents made sure their children learned about culture.

"When I was young, I had piano lessons, clarinet lessons and violin lessons," he said. "My sister had piano, violin and viola (lessons). I was encouraged to sing in choirs. ...

"The point is, no matter how hard up we were in the Depression, certain things like that — music lessons — came as a part of life, rather than saying we couldn't afford it."

Meijer carried that belief to the community. Declaring that city dwellers needed to get outdoors to preserve "mental stability," he donated seed money to develop a network of hiking and cycling trails in western Michigan.

"Beyond raising a family and working and surviving, that's where the arts come in, and that's the sugar and spice," he said.

Meijer is survived by his wife, Lena, and sons Hank, Doug and Mark. Funeral arrangements are pending.

The death was first reported by The Grand Rapids Press.

Dear Meijer Family,

A life well-lived.... a well-lived life, Fred Meijer.
Even in sadness, you must feel pride in the legacy left by someone so special. May that spirit continue to shine, lighting the way for others, leaving all of us an example to follow and a remarkable life to remember with grateful hearts. May your memories comfort you and yours and grant you peace. God Bless You All.

Dear Meijer Family,

Fred's and Meijer's influence on my life as an interior designer was known by many close to me. From the days you opened a store in 1995 in Lafayette, IN near where I was attending college at Purdue, to actually working on designing Meijer stores while employed at Integrated Architecture in GR, to my latest job designing pharmacies for the largest RX chain in the nation, Fred's innovative designs, awesome merchandising sense, and friendly demeanor made me want to become the retail designer that I am today! The Meijer stores inspired me since youth to become a retail designer and I thank Fred for this. If it wasn't for the Meijer's that my family visited while on vacation in Michigan in the early 1990's, the Meijer's opened in South Bend in 1994 or the Meijer opened near my college campus of Purdue in 1995, I may have been designing offices or hospitals.....but thanks to Fred, I gained my passionate design sense for retail! Thanks again Meijer family!

My prayers are with you and your family during this time of reflectance and sadness. God Bless you!

Fred was an inspiration in all areas of his life! His passion and zest for life will live on in his grocery stores, sculpture and garden park, relationships he formed with so many of his employees and through his family. My son and I loved the Meijer stores. We can't find any grocery chain in the Cleveland area that pleases us as much as Meijer. We shopped Meijer's three Fort Wayne, Indiana, stores while living in Fort Wayne. Now we live in North Royalton, Ohio, and often travel to Sandusky, Ohio, and shop Meijer there. Too Bad Meijer is not in Cleveland or surrounding suburbs.

December 1, 2011

I lived in Michigan from the late '60s into the early '80s. My father (now deceased) and mother continue to live there so we visit often. One of the things I (and now my children also) always look forward to is a trip to Meijer's. And that even though we have Wegman's here in New York.
I have fond memories of Thrifty Acres as well.
Thank you for for all those memories and for a great business model. Thank you also for your generous support of the arts; it is so important. As a 1st generation American, and having lived and studied in Europe, there are other governmental models which guarantee more stability for the arts. Thank you Fred and family for making up the difference. Western Michigan has a better quality of life, in part ,because of his and your families values. I truly hope they endure.
May his family find peace and consolation in knowing that Fred's contributions to the area will live forever and inspire countless others .
In sympathy, Susanne Guske & family (Skaneateles, NY)

I have worked for Meijer for 22 years and had the pleasure of meeting Fred several times since I did cashier training for a lot of the new stores prior to promoting to management. It was not unusual to look around and see Fred bagging groceries along side of Hank or helping a single Mom out with her groceries because she had her hands full with 4 children but the time I will not for get is when the Florence Ky. store opened it was so exciting for the people working at a store of this type and for Fred to be in the store talking to everyone one cashier was so excited that she had met Fred and got to shake hands with him that she went up to customers telling them that he was in the front of the store she proceeded to tell this to a female customer with great excitment and the customer just looked at her and smiled and told her that it wasn't such a big deal to her since she slept with him every night Oh what a surprise she also got to meet Lena.I will never forget sitting in the breakroom of the same store to have Fred come in and tell his stories he will be greatly missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with his Family.WE WILL MISS YOU FRED!!!

Thank you for adding to the quality of life in West Michigan. The last time I wrote the word Meijer was on a check for groceries. We'll see the encore in the next generation of his family. BRAVO!

Mr. Meijer - You made Grand Rapids a better place through your gifts and generosity. You will be missed by many. You modeled success for others, that was not reflected in ostentatious displays of wealth, but by a wealth of spirit and a humbleness and concern for others that was refreshing. You will be remembered as few others will.

My memories reflect a humble and very successful man who loved his family and the community he lived in.
What I respected most was how approachable he was and how willing he was to help others.
IN 1989, when the volunteer Chair of the United Way campaign was transferred suddenly, Mr Meijer stepped in with both feet to lead a successful fund raising effort.
I worked in the community with his son Hank and it was obvious that he had passed the community service passion on.
I will always remember his smile and his spirit.

Here is my Fred Meijer story. While I was working at the Gerald R. Ford Museum he and Lena came in. They introduced themselves to me and I said, "Oh, my girlfriend works at the Meijer Gardens in the giftshop." Lena immediately said, "Oh it must be that cute little thing Rachael." I spent a little bit of time extolling Rach's virtues (I wanted to talk her up in front of the Meijers since she worked for them). Fred looked at me and said, "Son if you love her so much you should marry her." I told him that was the plan and that I was saving money for a ring. He then said, "We'll then let me give you some advice that has kept me married for so long."

In your marriage if,
You want to keep your love cup filled up,
When you're wrong admit it,
And when you're right shut up.

Then he chuckled, said goodbye and they went on their way.

I would like to express my sincere condolences to the Fred Meijer Family. I would especially like to send a special condolence to my friend, Mary Beth Meijer and her family. Little did I know that when I moved to Grand Rapids in 1984 to work for the Army, that I would meet a Mary Beth and we would become lifelong friends. When she met Mark, I had the pleasure of meeting Fred and his wife Lena. I remember that Fred was so interested in what I did for the military. Fred and Lena made me feel like I was part of their family. I also remember that Fred told me that his birthday was December 7th which is the same as mine. He joked that it would be hard for anyone to forget our Birthday! May God bless all of you and I hope that you find comfort knowing that Fred had a great and positive impact on all that had the pleasure of meeting him. His kind soul and spirit will live on.

I have worked at Meijer for over 28 years now and have had the opportunity to meet Fred many times over the course of my career. Fred was always honest, genuine, funny, charming and such a great speaker/story teller. All of his stories contained lessons that we all could use in our everyday and business lives. I would have paid good money to hear him speak but I was lucky enough to get to listen to him for free.

His impact will never be forgotten. Because helped make history by taking on risks we have been blessed with such a great place to work and grow.

The most valuable lesson Fred conveyed was to treat everyone with dignity and respect no matter where you were in the organization and to treat the customers with the utmost courtesy.

We will miss you Fred

Sympathy and love for the Meijer family. So much has been given to the community.
My fondest memories are growing up in the 50/60s,going to"Thrifty"on Eastern Avenue. Mr Meijer would let me take the grocery cart home and load up on a winter's saving of pop bottles to return.
My Mother let me buy anything I wanted with that return. Usually it was 45's records at Thriftys. The first time I was allowed to run an errand for my mom was to go to Thrifty to get a carton of milk. I think that cost us about 37 cents. Later years at Thrifty Acres on 28th st...the Purple Cow. Years later I worked during a Christmas season at Meijer
on Clyde Park to earn Christmas money and get through a tight time.

My sincere, and genuine condolences to the Meijer family and extended loved ones. You were truly an inspirational leader that impacted many lives in a positive way throughout Grand Rapids, surrounding communities, and beyond with far reach.

Met you twice during my life, once as a knee high tall youngster as you handed out Purple Cow ice cream cone coupons at Plainfield store, and during my mid 20's for luncheon with your nephew visiting from California I was graciously included to join you at family luncheon at Charlie's Crab.

"You ain't much if you're not Dutch" gave you a smile, and grin from ear to ear.

Needless, to say I admired you during those two brief encounters for many reasons, but most of all ... you were very humble, sincere, and genuine.

You will always have a lasting imprint on our beloved state, and my hometown of Grand Rapids, Michigan

Some of my fondest memories are from a couple of shopping trips to Meijer with my daughters. With my oldest when she was a toddler and we were at the Michigan and Fuller store. she had just learned to talk and was calling all the blonde women in the store "grandma". The other was a family Black Friday trip in Cascade, when the 2 girls were in their 20's. They were dressed in Pajamas with the older pushing the youngest in a cart. It was a sight! Thank you and and your family for the great memories you have enabled our family and others to have. God bless you.

I have worked at the corporate office for Meijer for over 30 years. During my first week, I was walking in one morning from the middle of the parking lot and a gentleman got out of a car parked beside me. We were walking in together and he was asking me questions about my job and I said that this was my first week. He said, "Well let me introduce myself. I'm Fred Meijer." He was so friendly and interested in what I had to say. The last time I saw Fred was last week in the office. Always stopping by and talking with everyone that he saw. Never in a hurry and always made you feel so important and special. Fred will be truly missed. My thoughts and prayers to the family

We are truly saddened to hear of Fred's passing. With a combined 64 years of service, we have many wonderful memories and experiences and we are thankful for the opportunities we had throughout our careers at Meijer and having been part of the Meijer family. Fred's down to earth style, sincerity and forthrightness will long be remembered. His contributions to the community including the Meijer Gardens, the Meijer Heart Center and so much more will live on for many many years. We always enjoyed running into Fred and Lena when we went back to Michigan for our family visits. We also enjoy visiting the Gardens on many of our trips back as well as riding our bikes on the White Pines Trail. Thank you Fred for your vision. You have left a tremendous legacy to the community and will be greatly missed. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Lena, Hank, Doug, Mark and the family.

May God comfort you and your family. I met Mr. Meijer and his lovely wife at a conference at the Botanical Garden. He spoke to our group for the Ohio Travel & Tourism Conference Heartland. They both were sweet and friendly to all. He was quite comical too. I love Meijer stores and thank you for building a wonderful store for the common family.

I am writing this from Boston, MA. I am from Grand Rapids, but am caring for my mother-in-law in Boston. I met Fred Meijer when I worked at the Gleaners Food Bank. I volunteer now with a Boston Area Gleaners. We need to take on the philosophical values of people like Fred Meijer and Fred Rogers in our life and work, in our families and communities. This could be one way we could remember Fred Meijer and the Meijer family. Then someday we might hear "Well done, thou
good and faithful servant". God bless, bye for now, Fred.

I worked for Meijer for 17 years and you could not ask for a better company and a better family to be a part of. Fred use to visit our distribution centers unannounced and he was always an upbeat and FUN person to talk to. My family and I would not be where we are today without the Meijer family. Thank You Fred. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Meijer Family

Former Employee Kelly VanValkenburg

My very first job out of high school in 1984 at the Plainfield store in the pharmacy.....Mr. Meijer came in the pharmacy area back where only employees are allowed. Because he looked like a customer and my co-workers were just smiling and saying "hi", I said to my boss "why is this customer back here", he whispered "that's Fred Meijer". As he approached with a big smile, he said "hi, I'm Fred" and introduced himself to me. Very down to earth, didn't put himself up on a pedestal or make you feel like you were beneath him at all. He made you feel very important and proud that you were his employee.

Fred Meijer left a wonderful legacy, his family should be proud. My Condolences to his family and friends at this time.

I was honored to not only work for FRED MEIJER at the 54th street store in the 80s but I got to know him on a personal note when he took care of one of my patients at Luther Home nursing home in the 90s. He and his wife LENA visited Charlie every Mon and brought him homemade pineapple cookies. Fred Meijers will be dearly missed

I haven't lived in Michigan for a long time but still have fond memories of getting a Purple Cow w/ my dad when I was a kid and working at the Meijer's in Ionia when I was in High School. It was there that I once met Mr. Meijer. A brief encounter but an impacting one. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and loved ones. I know he will be greatly missed. ~Sue Rosenberger (Fairbanks, Alaska)

My husband and I are thankful to Fred for the fact that all four of our children worked at Meijer for their first jobs. They learned how to be great employees and several still mention Fred pushing carts and waving at folks in the parking lot. Also him passing out purple cow cards.

I was really saddened by the news of Fred passing away. I had the pleasure of meeting Fred and Lena when they came to our store in Stevensville Michigan 2011. They were both very down to earth and so friendly to everyone they meet. I am so happy I had the opportunity to meet them both. Fred and Lena even signed my book about the story about Meijer and his life. My prayers and thoughts go out to Lena and the family.

I worked for Meijer's in Grand Rapids in the 60's and had the pleasure of meeting Hendrik and Fred. They instilled a family atmosphere and a passion for customer service and low prices. Because of great experience at Meijer's, I stayed in the grocery business for the next 40 years, many as a Store Manager. Thank you and God Bless! Robin Courser (Las Vegas, NV)

I worked for the Meijer company for 11 years and every time Fred came in the store and he would stop and shake my hand and call me by my first name...when I worked in the Jenison store in the garden center he always pushed carts in when he stopped in for a visit...then came in and bagged groceries if we were busy...VERY nice man...I'm sure he will be missed by his family and by the people of west Michigan...Diane Lesinski, Grand Rapids

I was so saddened to hear of Fred's passing. What a kind and wonderful man and employer who truly cared about all his team members! My family and I are thankful to have had the privilege to work for his company and enjoy the many things he has brought to West Michigan. I love hearing all the different stories about him and hope he knew all the lives he had such an impact on. He is one in a million and will surely be missed! Prayers for Lena and all the family.
