Lech Kaczynski Obituary

WARSAW, Poland (AP) — Polish President Lech Kaczynski, who died Saturday in a plane crash in Russia, was a one-time anti-communist activist who teamed up with his twin brother to take his country in a nationalist, conservative direction.

Kaczynski, 60, pursued a strongly pro-U.S. line in foreign relations, in accordance with a cross-party consensus that has grown in Poland since the fall of communism. He was an enthusiastic backer of plans to site a U.S. missile defense facility in the country, the largest of the European Union's new eastern members.

However, the prickly nationalism of Kaczynski and his identical twin brother, Jaroslaw — who served for a time as prime minister and is now opposition leader — sometimes complicated ties with European neighbors and Russia.

The president, for example, long held out against the EU's so-called Lisbon reform treaty before signing it last November. Still, his appeal at home rested partly on his forthright representation of Polish views and his tough stance on law and order.

Kaczynski first rose to fame as a child movie star alongside his identical twin in a hit movie in 1962, "Two Who Stole the Moon," about two troublemakers who try to get rich by stealing the moon and selling it. That was the end of their film career, however.

In the 1970s and 1980s, the Kaczynski brothers were activists in the anti-communist opposition and went on to serve as advisers to Solidarity founder Lech Walesa.

Kaczynski supported Walesa's presidential bid in 1990 and became the chief presidential adviser on security issues. His cooperation with Walesa later ended in acrimony over political differences, and Walesa was defeated in 1995 by ex-communist Aleksander Kwasniewski.

Kaczynski served as Poland's justice minister in 2000-2001, and his tough stance against crime laid the foundations for the popularity that would fuel his later rise to the presidency.

He became mayor of Warsaw in 2001, and won respect for a no-nonsense style and plain-speaking reputation.

His opponents, however, viewed him as narrow-minded, provincial and overzealous in his drive to cleanse the country of the influence of former communists. And he drew criticism from human rights groups for trying to stop a gay-rights parade through Poland's capital.

In seeking the presidency in 2005, he made clean government a key pledge — a promise that resonated after a string of corruption scandals that saw ex-communists swept from power.

"Our country needs renewal, the renewal of public life," Kaczynski has said.

Kaczynski's popularity declined as head of state, however. In 2007, his identical twin brother was voted out as prime minister after a two-year stint in which he failed to hold together a shaky coalition with small, unpredictable populist parties.

The government of Prime Minister Donald Tusk — the man Kaczynski beat for the presidency — has gained respect for avoiding a recession at the depths of the economic crisis and for a smoother foreign policy. Kaczynski faced an uphill struggle to win re-election later this year.

Kaczynski was a firm friend of Poland's Jewish community, which has enjoyed a revival in recent years after it was nearly wiped out in the Holocaust and later suffered from communist-era repression.

In 2008, he became the first head of state to attend a religious service at a synagogue in Poland. As mayor, he promoted a planned museum on Jewish history by donating city land to the project.

Kaczynski was killed along with wife, Maria, an economist. He is survived by the couple's daughter, Marta; two granddaughters, Ewa and Martyna; his twin brother, Jaroslaw; and the twins' mother, Jadwiga.

Prayer for a Deceased President of Poland

In Your wise providence, O God, You wished Your servant Polish President Lech Kaczynski to be counted one of the Presidents. Please number him also among the company of Your saintly Presidents, we beg You, since he ruled as custodian on earth of Your only Son. Lord, as we mourn the sudden death of Polish President, his wife Maria and many leaders (90) of the government, the military, and the Church, show us the immense power of Your goodness and strengthen our belief that THEY have entered into Your Presence. This we ask through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

O Lord, We humbly pray that You direct the leaders of Poland, the leaders of this great nation now in this time of crisis. Grant them wisdom and understanding, and help them to respond quickly and effectively to this situation. Direct them that they may do what is right in Your sight. May they follow Your Divine Will to lead the Polish nation on the paths of peace and safety.
Unite all response agencies in an organized and harmonious fashion to bring quick and effective resolve to the demands of this crisis. Empower us as Polish citizens to do our own part, financially, physically, emotionally, and spiritually to support all who have been affected by this tragedy.
O Lord, I pray that You encourage and strengthen Polish nation. Surround Poland with Your Love and Mercy! Bring peace and comfort to all those who are suffering as a result of this crisis. In Jesus' Holy Name. Amen.

To the family of Lech Karczynski: I am so very sorry about the tragic loss of your mother and father. When tragedy happens like this, it is hard to find the right words to say. When that happens I rely on the greatest spokesman of all, Jesus. His words found in the Bible book of Matthew chapter 11 verses 28-30 are comforting. Please go to him in prayer and allow him to share your load. He loves you and cares for you. May his grace be with you always.

To the people of Poland:

It’s hard to understand why these beautiful people were taken at this time. Perhaps they have been called to a higher form of work or have been rewarded by release from all work. The loss of so many at one time is a heavy blow. My eyes fill with tears when I think of your nation’s loss. My prayer for you is that the Lord who called them will give you strength to go on from here and that one day your pain will be replaced by beautiful memories.

Dear People of Poland,
Lord, as we mourn the sudden death of Polish President Lech Kaczynski, his wife Maria and many (90) leaders of the government, the military, and the Church, show us the immense power of Your goodness and strengthen our belief that THEY have entered into Your Presence. Amen
We extend our condolences on the passing of your Beloved President Lech Kaczynski, his wife Maria and many leaders (90) of the government, the military, and the Church.
Dear People of Poland, the losse(s) of the President, his wife Maria and many leaders of the government, the military, and the Church.are very difficult to bear. People of Poland! We share your grief. That's certainly not easy. The process of working through those losses is a very difficult and confusing one. Our Catholic Church tells us it is helpful to pray (eg.the Rosary) for those who have died. We have come to believe that God is at least as upset about your loss as we are. After all, Jesus stood and wept at the tomb of his friend Lazarus. Even Jesus was not spared death. Our comfort is in the Sorrowful Mysteries of the Rosary where we can encounter the reality of our human position and the truth that is Our Lord's agony and death. We sense the sword piercing the heart of his Mother on Calvary, Mother of Jesus felt His pain at Golgatha, that sorrowful pain when you People of Poland experienced now when She saw Jesus expired on the cross and her arms received His broken Body.
Dear People of Poland, you are men and women of prayers we will pray the Rosary with you not only for the Late President but for 20,000 Polish officers and intelligentsia - the victim of the Katyn massacre [Katyn is the site of the Soviet's massacres]. Let us remember July 1943 in our personal intentions, a plane carrying General W. Sikorski plunged into the sea immediately after takeoff from Gibraltar, killing all on board, 15 leaders of the polish government except the pilot.
God, Creator and Redeemer of all the faithful, grant to the souls of Your servants and handmaids the forgiveness of all their sins. Through our devout prayers may they obtain the pardon which they have always desired. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Szczesliwy maz, który nie idzie za rada wystepnych,
nie wchodzi na droge grzeszników
i nie siada w kole szyderców,
lecz ma upodobanie w Prawie Pana,
nad Jego Prawem rozmysla dniem i noca.
Jest on jak drzewo zasadzone nad plynaca woda,
które wydaje owoc w swoim czasie,
a liscie jego nie wiedna:
co uczyni, pomyslnie wypada.
Nie tak wystepni, nie tak:
sa oni jak plewa, która wiatr rozmiata.
Totez wystepni nie ostoja sie na sadzie

bo Pan uznaje droge sprawiedliwych,
a droga wystepnych zaginie. (P.1)
