Robert Chollar Dean

1921 - 2013

Robert Chollar Dean, 92, of Stafford, Va., passed away on Thursday, Dec. 5, 2013. He was born Feb. 24, 1921, in Shaker Heights, Ohio, he was the son of the late Robert Charles Dean and Ella Mae Chollar Dean.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Nancy Jane Weaver Dean.
Mr. Dean was a lifelong learner and loved all of his years of education; Shaker Heights High School (1938), Case Western School of Engineering (1942), Bexley Hall, Masters of Divinity, (1953), post graduate work at Columbia University, The College of Preachers, and Colgate Rochester Divinity School (1979). Mr. Dean was a PT Boat Captain in the Mediterranean in World War II. Prior to the Ministry, Mr. Dean was a chemical engineer in Cleveland Ohio and NYC. After his ordination in 1954, Mr. Dean served as an Episcopal minister at Church of the Good Shepherd in Lyndhurst, Ohio, from 1954 to 1976, and St John's Episcopal Church in Farmington, New Mexico from 1981 to 1989. Mr. Dean and his family participated in the Wates-Seabury Exchange in 1964 and'65, during which time Mr. Dean served as Vicar to St Paul's Rusthall Parrish, in Kent, England, in the province of Canterbury. Years of additional volunteer work included pastoral counseling, hospital chaplaincy, and serving on numerous Boards.
Mr. Dean had a great love of travel which he instilled in his children. He also loved baseball and followed the Cleveland Indians to his last days. Mr. Dean was a member of St. George's Episcopal Church in Fredericksburg, Va.
Mr. Dean leaves behind four adult children, Robert Paul Dean, partner Oro Lynn Benson, of Santa Fe, Timothy Andrew Dean, wife Sally, of Boston, Mass., Miriam Dean-Otting, husband Charles, of Gambier, Ohio, and Anne Dean Kadis, husband, Christopher, of Stafford, Va., and eight grandchildren, Jaime and Jona Dean, Michelle Dean-Onabajo and Andrew Dean, Nathaniel and Jacob Otting, and Robert Kadis and Sarah Kadis Kirkpatrick, and five great-grandchildren.
A private service will be held for family members.
