Dr. Cecilia Austin

1933 - 2025

Dr. Cecilia (Cartwright) Austin Elizabeth City - A joyful well-lived life ended on July 8, 2025. Dr. Cecilia Cartwright Austin, "Ceci," beloved mother, grandmother, friend, mentor, and teacher sadly left our world.

Ceci was born in Elizabeth City, NC on October 16, 1933, the only child of Elwyn and Elva Cartwright. She grew up in Engelhard, NC and graduated from Engelhard High School. In 1954, she graduated from East Carolina Teachers College with a degree in Education. She continued her education by earning a master's degree in Education from East Carolina and a Doctorate in Education from Vanderbilt University.

Ceci made her home in Elizabeth City and dedicated her life to teaching and service within the community. She became a regular on the stage in many local theatre productions, volunteered with the Sentara Hospital Auxiliary Women for 35 years, and served as president of the organization for many years. She also served on the City Council from 2001 to 2005.

However, the community that was dearest to her heart was her Christ Church family. A member since 1974, Ceci became active within her new church. She was trained as a Lay reader, a Chalice Bearer, and sang in the choir for over 40 years.

Ceci's life was an inspiration to the many friends and loved ones she leaves behind, especially her children: Her son, Carl Austin (Cheila) of Elizabeth City and daughter Kimberly Parrish of Coinjock; her grandchildren, Cille, Garrett, Hannah, and Shelby; and her four great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, at Christ Episcopal Church. Inurnment will be in the Church's Cremation Garden.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Christ Episcopal Church, 200 S. McMorrine Street, Elizabeth City, NC 27909.
