1938 - 2025

Geraldine Newsome Grandy - Margaret "Geraldine" Terry Newsome, age 87, of Grandy, NC, went home to the Lord on Friday, October 10, 2025. She died peacefully in her home with her children by her side. She was born in Bertie County, NC, on April 1, 1938. Geraldine was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Eddie Cecil Newsome (April 24, 2015).

Geraldine was a lifelong member of St. John's Baptist Church in Ahoskie, NC and was a member of Powell's Point Christian Church the last few years of her life. Church, Bible Study, outreach ministries, and fellowship was the foundation of her entire life! She wandered into a Church, on her own, at the tender age of four and began attending services regularly. She became a Sunday school teacher at age 18 and taught Bible study and women's ministry for nearly 70 years. Geraldine was truly an angelic soul, never known to utter a curse word. She never drank alcohol or smoked a cigarette; never gossiped or criticized others. She lived as closely as she could to emulating Jesus Christ and following Biblical principles. Geraldine's generous heart touched the lives of her large extended family and countless number of friends from every aspect of her life - Church, Bible Study, golf, co-workers and beyond. During her final days, loved ones lined up to get one more opportunity to be with her and to be in her warm presence. She gave selflessly of herself until her final hours on this earth. She never complained and she had a sweet look on her face when she took her last breath.

Geraldine was one of the smartest girls in Aulander High School. She was a cheerleader for the basketball team and during an Aulander- Murfreesboro game, Eddie Newsome caught her eye, and it was love at first sight. They married at age seventeen and she had all five of her children by the time she was twenty-six years old. She was always kind, gentle, caring and soft-spoken. She faithfully watched Jeopardy every night and was quite good at answering difficult trivia questions. A voracious reader, the Bible was her favorite book of all time. Geraldine loved playing golf and was very proud of her Hole in One in 2010. She loved hosting holiday celebrations for her big extended family, and she wanted all her family to visit as often as they could.

She is survived by her children; Debbie Joyner, Scarlett Downs, Wanda Davis (Mike Ray), Jimmy Newsome (Ami Newsome), and Gina West (Eddie West); many beloved grandchildren; Ricky Deanes (Heather), Jennifer Newsome (Glen), Kevin Deanes (Becky), Crystal Luna (James), Phillip Davis (Kathryn), Taylor Joyner (Josh), Damien Jones, Brian West, Sallie West, and Brandon Gregory (Jessica); her great-grandchildren, Madison Deanes, Cameron Deanes, Rylee Presscott, Leah Smith, Madelynn Deanes, Noah Smith, Rayne Smith, Jordan Luna, Harper Lassiter, Theo West, Oakley Luna, Sawyer Davis, Gentry Gregory, and Slade Gregory.

All five of her children helped take care of her during her illness the last few months of her life and they consider it a privilege to have had that intimate and extra time with her.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 16, 2025, at Powells Point Christian Church with Pastor Vince Rodkey officiating. A private burial will follow at Poplar Branch Baptist Church Cemetery.
