John lll Obituary

John "Johnny " Johnson lll Elizabeth City - John "Johnny" William Johnson III, age 74, a life-long resident of Elizabeth City, NC, died September 16, 2025, after a brief battle with cancer. He was born in Pasquotank County, NC, on December 17, 1950, to the late John William Johnson, Jr. and Mildred Wrae Shannonhouse Johnson, and was the husband of 44 years to Linda "Katie" Herron Johnson.

Johnny is best described by anyone who ever had the pleasure to meet him as the best man they had ever met. He was humble, loyal, a bit silly, and held the most infectious laugh that could bring anyone into fits of giggles along with him. He was a man devoted to his family and worked hard to support them, retiring in early 2016 after 35 years from George Wood Farms.

Johnny loved fishing, gardening, and any classic dad jokes. He was a member of the local Bonsai Club, enjoyed cooking, and walking his beloved dog Shadow. He was a sci-fi nerd, lover of classic rock, and a steadfast silver-age Marvel comic book fan, passing his love of Marvel on to his grandson, Deacon.

Johnny is survived by his wife, Katie; a daughter, Shannon Fox; two bonus daughters, Jennifer (Carl) Berry and Amber K; three sisters, Karen Johnson, Marianne Cooper, and Barbara Weatherly; five grandsons, Deacon Fox, Luke Fox, David Hurt, Will Widgeon, and Ashton Zeigler; two granddaughters, Reva Cartwright and Brooklynn Zeigler; three great-grandsons, Remington Hess, Ruger Cartwright, and Christian Hurt; three great-granddaughters, Trinity McGhinnis, Carter Hurt, and Codi Hurt; a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, great-great nieces and nephews; and his dog, Shadow. He was preceded in death by his stepson, David Cartwright, and son-in-law, Gregg Fox Jr.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Arrangements will be posted here once they are available.

In lieu of flowers his family asks you to plant something in your own garden in honor of Johnny's memory.
