My sincere apologies for not posting sooner Mike, I guess it took the 20th anniversary of 9/11 to highlight how fast the years go by. I knew Mike mostly thru the high school years, but I believe we crossed paths once or twice when we were at the same duty station in the Marines. When Mike was a DI he found out my younger brother Kevin was in boot camp and took the time to check in on him to be sure he was OK. I was never sure what he meant by "Check in on him" but my guess is to probably got Kevin some extra PT!
During our senior year Mike was at my house and I introduced him to my father, Francis Killeen (GySgt USMC). My father, ever the recruiter, was always on the lookout for "a few good men" and he took an instant liking to Mike. Mike really was the perfect Marine candidate and my father knew it. A few weeks after they initially met, I came home to find Mike at my house, not to hang out with me, but to meet with my dad! He was there for hours listening to all my father's stories about his time in WWll, Korea, and Vietnam. I guess I had heard the stories so many times I never appreciated them as much as someone hearing them for the first time. The stories and my father's enthusiasm really lit a fire under Mike. They met regularly up until the day Mike left for Paris Island. When Mike came home on leave he almost always made a stop to see my father.
My father passed in 1999 and thankfully was not here for 9/11, it would have broken his heart to find out Mike had been taken from us, especially by such a cowardly terrorist act.
My sincere condolences to Mike's family and his many friends
Mike you are a true hero and gave the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty

I remember Mike as a high school baseball teammate leaping over a fence trying to catch a home run with reckless abandon. The opposing team started to laugh, but their coach immediately scolded his players commenting on the extraordinary effort Mike displayed. At that moment I realized giving 200 percent was in Mike's blood which motivated me to exert the same effort in everything I do. Mike "The Motivator". I am proud that Mike touched my life forever. My name is Judy Beasley. Sgt. Curtin was my son's DI on Parris Island, SC. I have been doing research on my uncle, S/Sgt John Wallace Rogers, whose plane was shot down over France during WWII. All aboard were MIA & later declared dead. One of the names listed was a T/Sgt Michael F. Curtin. I was wondering if anyone in the family knows if there is a connection. I would be honored to know that a member of your family was with my family member at that time

Well here we are again huh Mike. I thought that someday it might be easier but deep down I know it won't .This is a very dark time for me personally and as I try to climb out I realize it's better for me to be where I am. 343 is always etched right in the front of my mind everyday. Not to take anything away from the rest of the 1st responders and civilians in the mess. I miss you my brother, I remember like yesterday the times on the street and the people we were fortunate enough to be with, Gunny Kirby, Klemm, Roche, Wentworth and a slew of others that will forever be bonded together. Look down over us Mike and keep us away from that cliff, because it's always looming right in front.

I was only in one class of Mike's, but knew him from the bus ride home and living closeby. He was a true leader, a kind of 'mayor' type personality. I saw him out of school once in his marine uniform and I thought, "That figures", such a cleancut guy and brave, he has to love the marines. Then, I saw him in church one night before choir started at St. Anthony's and he was praying on his knees at the altar with his daughter. I thought, "Wow, Michael, you are leading your children to God, what an amazing thing to teach." My heart goes out to the Curtin family who lost a wonderful husband, father, brother and son. God Bless You, Michael Curtin.

Where do I begin? I grew up with Mike in Rocky Point. He was full of life, energy, he was mischeivous and everyones friend. He was always a big guy, a mans man and a girls friend, a catch, a nut job! He had a nick name "psyho" said with love... He had a wonderful way about him, a great laugh, a sensitivity at the same time a tough competitor.... He was loveable and we were all so proud of his accomplishments in the service. I am so proud and grateful to have known him. My heart goes out to his family... My deepest sympathies to the Curtin family. I knew Mike from Rocky Point HS, he was a great role model and a friend. He was the guy we all looked up to. An incredible athelete, I always expected to see him in professional sports, he was that good. Like other selfless, incredibly gifted people, he instead served his country by joining the USMC. I'm pretty sure he joined because of my father (Gunnery Sgt Timmy Killeen, USMCR). Mike would come to my house, many times even when I wasn't there, and shoot the breeze with my father for hours talking about the Marine. My father saw alot of promise in Mike and loved talking with him. Who wouldn't, Mike really was a Marine's Marine. As Charlie M said, this generation's Chesty Puller...couldn't have said it better. I am incredibly proud to have known him.

Dear Curtin Family,
I was only three years old when 9-11 happend, but I am now old enough to understand the tragedy that took place on that awful day.
Our school has and done a lot to educate us about this awful day, and remember all of the families that were affected in any way.I am now in the eighth grade. On the tenth year anniversary, the students from our school released red, white, and blue balloons in memory of the victoms who lost their lives and their families. Today, we are going to plant bulbs, making a memory garden at our school.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.
Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."
It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.
God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.
When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.
I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.
There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.
If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.
So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.
And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

As Michael's youngest male cousin, he was always a hero in my eyes. As my mother's godson he maintained a special place in her heart. They were the original 'Curtin Girls', his aunt Peggy and Maureen. Though they would never admit to any favoritism, they adored the boy they called Michaelughich.
I spent most of my childhood around that big stud, yet I never recall a frown from his face, only smiles. Mike is one of the funniest guys I've ever known. A simple look from him encouraged uncontrollable laughter from even those with the slightest sense of humor. A no bs guy with a smile on his face, naturally missed.
He's keeping company with our sainted grandmother these days. She would always light up in his company. I'd like to think that they are together and happy.

Mike and I both attended the Barton Elementry School Human Flag ceremony back when our daughters were students there.I sat with him up on the deck by the annex bldg. and we were talking when the ceremony for welcoming home the Veterans and Hero's of Gulf War 1 began.
Little did I know that all the guys on the deck were Honories and I was not suposed to be up there lol.
I went to leave the deck and Mike said no stay here it's ok,no one will ever know.
I stood up with the row of Honories and was sweating bullets as I felt like everyone knew I wasn't suposed to be there.Well it went off without a hitch and I was glad when it was over. Then One of the organizers said you are wearing a blue shirt and we need all teh extras we can get to to form the flag,so now I was in the photo and was proud to be part of such a memorable event.I thank you Mike for making me feel relaxed in a silly situation. You are a great Friend, neighbor and I will always remember you and I salute your flag each morning as I pass your home.

To The Curtain Family,
I remembered this name from Thurs. when the children mentioned his name and promised myself to write. I did not know he was a police officer. My husband happens to also be an NYPD police officer currently applying for a position in ESU. So there is a slight connnection.
I think that God chooses certain men and women to protect us. These people who are our police and firemen, our everyday heroes. On Sept.11 He chose to take Michael to be an eternal hero, an angel to protect all of us forever. God bless you all.

I MET MIKE WHEN I WAS 8 YRS OLD IN THE BACK OF THE BEACH PLAYING IN THE SAND. I ASKED HIM TO BE MY FRIEND AND HE SAID O.K. I DID'NT KNOW AT THE TIME, BUT HE WOULD BECOME LIKE A BROTHER TO ME. HE WAS A LEADER OF MEN EVEN AT 8 YRS. OLD. THE WORD CAN'T WAS NEVER IN HIS VOCABULARY. HE WOULD EXCEL IN SCHOOL, SPORTS AND BECAME ROCKY POINT HIGH SCHOOL'S CLASS VICE PRESIDENT AND CLASS ATHLETE. MIKE WOULD ALWAYS HELP OTHERS WHO WERE NOT AS GIFTED AS HIM, AND HE WOULD HAVE A POSITIVE AFFECT ON WHOEVER HE CAME IN CONTACT WITH AND HE TOUCHED MANY PEOPLE IN HIS LIFE. MIKE, MYSELF AND TOMMY SHUKER WERE CLOSE FRIENDS GROWING UP AND WE DID EVERYTHING TOGETHER, AND WE REMAINED CLOSE THROUGH OUR ADULT LIVES. I served as a reservist with Mike Curtin in F Co., 2nd Bn, 25th Marines. I remember when he first arrived and word spread that he had been a drill instructor, there was some dismay that he would look down on the rest of us "weekend warriors". Nothing could be further from the truth. Mike was a supremely professional and motivated Marine whose enthusiasm was infectious. He loved the Corps and was the quintessential "grunt". I left the unit in '89 and didn't run into Mike again for some time. I had joined the NYPD in '86, and years later, who did I see on a detail but a certain salt and pepper haired jarhead as a bright and shiny new rookie. It just didn't feel right though. I was the salty dog veteran and he was the newby. It just didn't sound right calling him Mike and not Gunny. Next I read about his trip to Oklahoma and the recovery of our fellow Marine and I couldn't help feeling that Mike was the right man to be there. When his name was mentioned as one of the missing on that fateful day, after the initial shock, I realized that he had answered the call yet again. This time he gave his all for his fellow New Yorkers. My sincere condolences to his wife, whom I met years ago at the unit's Marine Corps Ball, his daughters and his whole family. Semper Fi, Mike. You'll always be Gunny to me!

While browsing through the June 2003 issue of Leatherneck Magazine two nights ago, that often familiar voice that lives within me began repeating "say it ain't so," when I noticed that the Marine Corps League has a Detachment named in honor of Sergeant Major Michael J. Curtain (See page 71). At first I thought, "no, it can't be," but then again I was attempting to deny the obvious, for this had to be the same Marine that I continued to cross paths with for 16 years. And without any prior knowledge of his death, I knew immediately that he had to be one of the fallen heroes of Sept. 11, 2001.
Mike and I first met at Parris Island, SC in 1979 when we were both a couple of young and motivated Sergeants. We trained recruits together on a few occasions, as he was a Drill Instructor and I was a Primary Marksmanship Instructor. I distinctly remember the time that Mike gave me a ride home in his van and we hit it off right away because we were both "grunts" (infantrymen).
In 1983 I ran into Mike again in Hawaii. This time we were both Staff Sergeants with the 2n Battalion, 3rd Marines. While aboard the USS Peleliu, Mike and I shared a bunk-space together during a 6-month Western Pacific Deployment (1983-84). It was during this time that I gained a lot of respect for Mike as I began to see first hand, the true professionalism that he never failed to display.
Then in May (or June) of 1995 while I was serving on recruiting duty in Brooklyn, NY, I read in the Marine Corps Times that a Marine Reservist from New York, who was also a Police Officer with the Emergency Services Unit of the NYPD, had accompanied a team of rescue personnel to Oklahoma City shortly after the Murrah Federal Building had been bombed by an infamous domestic terrorist (whose name is not worthy of mentioning in this guest book entry) on April 19, 1995. The first thought that crossed my mind was, "can this be the same Mike Curtain that I know?" My second thought was, "when and why did he leave active duty to become a reservist?" Then it dawned on me that during our 6-months aboard the USS Peleliu, Mike had drilled me with scores of questions about the Marine Corps Reserve, as he knew that I had previously served in the reserves. So I knew that this had to be the same Mike Curtain, and I was determined to visit him prior to completing my tour of recruiting duty later that Fall.
Then just a few months after that (in September 1995) I was attending the Staff Noncommissioned Officers Academy at Quantico, VA. It was early on a Monday morning when I was returning from a 3-mile run, that I noticed a large group of First Sergeants and Master Sergeants standing outside the main building. They were all dressed in their Summer Service "C" uniforms, and I knew they were there to attend a 5-day seminar. As I looked through the crowd with the anticipation of recognizing a familiar face (or two), I was nearly floored when I saw this gray-haired First Sergeant staring at me with this s#%t eating grin on his face. Although our reunion lasted only 10 minutes, we somehow managed to catch each other up (the way Marines do) on the 11-years since we had last seen one another.
As it turned out, this was to be our final reunion. And not because he (or I) failed to stay in touch, for Marines seldom do. After all, we were never best friends; just two professionals who respected one another, and were fortunate to have crossed paths 3 separate times in 3 separate decades; enough to witness each other's hair turn from dark brown, to salt and pepper, to..., well you get my meaning. And as I reminisce about a time that once was, I can see Mike's face so clearly etched in the memories of Parris Island, Hawaii, the USS Peleliu, Australia, the Philippines, Korea, and Quantico. But more importantly, when I think of Mike, I think of the selfless sacrifices he made for our country, the Marine Corps, and to the people of New York. Sacrifice is what Mike was all about. It was embedded throughout his character. A passage taken from the Robert Frost poem "The Road Not Taken," best epitomizes what Mike Curtain stood for: "Two roads diverged in a wood, and I - I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference."
May God bless Sergeant Major Michael J. Curtain and the beloved family he left behind.

Firstly, my deepest condolences to the Curtin family. So happens that I have a vivid memory and reminder of Mike Curtin. I have a small scar under my right eye that was put there by Sgt Mike Curtin when we were in Drill Instructor school together on Parris Island back in the very late '70s. Mike went to 3rd battalion and I went to 1st, but it's a pretty small island. While attending my son's graduation on the Island in February, '02, I visited the Marine Corps Drill Instructor school. Proudly hanging on the wall is a photo of our class with Sgt Curtin standing tall. Those who knew him as a New York cop saw the man that was forged as a Marine. Mike, you know the words, and now I'm sure you've seen, "IF THE ARMY OR THE NAVY EVER LOOK ON HEAVENS SCENES, THEY WILL FIND THE STREETS ARE GUARDED BY UNITED STATES MARINES." Semper Fidelis, Mike!

I am a friend & neighbor of the Curtin family. The Mike Curtin our family remembers was a kind, giving man. One who would open his home to you on a moments notice...The Dad at the soccer fields yelling "Go Heth", His face beaming at all the school concerts. The heroic deeds Mike did at work and elsewhere weren't common knowledge to many of us on the soccer fields. We only knew he was a hard working NYCPD Officer who, like most of us, was juggling his job, Helga's job, and a very busy home/school life with his 3 talented daughters. Many of his feats of patriotism and heroism were learned after the tragedy of 9/11. What was mostly conveyed by Mike was his love and committment to his family. Mike's spirit and true legacy is within them. Helga, Jen, Erica & Heather, our love & support is always there for you.

Today, 9/11/02 our public school honored and remembered those lost loved ones. HS students placed a small history card with Mikes name which was tied to my car attenna with blue, red and white ribbons. So, I got to this web site and found him. He sounds like he was a great man and sounds like he put on one heck of a breakfast, just like my dad. He was in the Army. God speed the healing process. God Bless us all.

To the family of Michael Curtin:
I chose a mercy band bearing Michael's name in November of last year. I am lucky in that I suffered no personal loses on 9/11, just shared the greif of a nation. I chose a police officer because I have several close friends who serve on the force, and I know that any one of them could risk their lives at any time. I don't know why I chose the name Sergeant Michael Curtin from the stacks and stacks of those available, but I did. I have worn his name on my wrist almost every day ever since, as a reminder that there are people in the world who will risk all for others. Today I pulled up Michael's biography for the first time, in preparation for a memorial service the community college I teach at will be giving tomorrow. I wanted to share anything I could find out with my students tomorrow, as we reflect on the horrors of last year. The biography only told me what I already knew, that Michael was an honorable man, who served others and our country with no regret, and that he is missed terribly by those who loved him. I want to express my sorrow for your loss, and I want you to know that even though I did not know Michael personally, I have greived for him and all of the lives lost that horrible day last year in my own way, and will continue to do so. I will continue to wear Michael's name with pride.
Sincerely,
Shannon Haney Leissner
