Preston Meekins Obituary
Coinjock resident
Mr. Preston Ferel Meekins, 81, of Waterlily Road, Coinjock, passed away Jan. 11, 2012 at Albemarle Hospital. Born in Colington, he was the son of the late John Oscar Meekins Sr. and the late Zenova Perry Meekins, and was the husband of Lois Johnson Meekins of the residence. Mr. Meekins served in the US Coast Guard as Boatswain Mate Master Chief Petty Officer, retiring after 22 years of service. He was a member of Colington United Methodist Church. In addition to his wife, Mr. Meekins is survived by his daughters, Jeanne Murray of Coinjock, Cathy Forbes of Coinjock, Iris Meekins of Coinjock and Dana Carter of Farmville, Va.; a son, Jackie Meekins of Farmville, Va.; a brother, John O. Meekins Jr. of Chesapeake, Va.; grandchildren, Jason Forbes, Preston Murray, Robert Murray, Samuel Murray, Casey Madarazo, Amanda Rucker, Joshua Meekins, Wesley Carter, Jordan Carter, and Maria Carter; and seven great-grandchildren. Mr. Meekins was preceded in death by his son, Wayde Meekins; a sister, Rita McBride; two brothers, Norman and Robert Meekins; and a great-grandchild. A graveside service with military honors for Mr. Meekins will be conducted on Friday, Jan. 13, 2012 at 11 a.m. at Meekins Family Cemetery, Colington, with the Rev. Renee Edwards officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Sharon United Methodist Church, Poplar Branch. Twiford Funeral Homes, Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, is assisting the Meekins family. Condolences may be expressed to the family at www.twifordfh.com.
