Robert Parker "Bob" Midgett
GREENSBORO - Robert Parker "Bob" Midgett, 88, born July 25, 1929, died on
April 21st at the age of 88. Bob was born and raised in Elizabeth City,NC, the only child of Pearl Berry and Asa Parker Midgett. Growing up, he spent summers with family on the island of Wanchese, NC, where he learned to shuck and eat raw oysters, a lifelong delicacy he enjoyed. Bob loved to regale his family and friends with many stories of his childhoodexperiences and antics along the Outer Banks.
Bob served in the US Air Force and was stationed at Adak Airbase, Alaska, in the Aleutian Islands. He attended UNC-Chapel Hill and was a member ofSigma Nu fraternity and AFROTC, graduating in 1953. During a summer break, Bob met Janet King Francis, of Washington, DC, in Kill Devil Hills, NC and they married in 1952. He continued as an active USAF Reservist until 1959.
Bob had a long career in sales and management with Friden Inc., covering the US and abroad. Bob and Jan, and their four children eventually settled in Greensboro, NC, where he established BMI Business Machines in 1974, later becoming BMI Mail Systems. Bob was a member of many business organizations, but was most proud of his 45 years in Summit Rotary Club, where he was a Paul Harris Fellow, Past President, and forged close friendships.
Bob is survived by his wife of 65 years, Janet Francis Midgett; his children and their spouses, Lisa Kissner Cooper (Steve), Paige Cargal Kester (Tripp), Gina Midgett Kinard (Jim), and Robert Parker Midgett, II (Susan); grandchildren, Josh Kinard (Diane Collopy), Kristina Kinard, Dylan Cargal, Jameson Midgett, Parke Kissner, and Mary Kathryn Midgett; step-grandchildren, Olivia Kester Shelton (Alex), Mitchell Cooper and Christopher Cooper; and step-siblings, Carole Morgan Sawyer and Richard Morgan. Bob was preceded in death by his parents; step-mother, Martha Berry Morgan Midgett; and grandson, Chase Cargal.
A memorial service will be held at the WhiteStone Retirement Community Chapel, 700 S Holden Road, Greensboro, NC with a private interment at St. Francis Episcopal Church. The service will be held on Thursday, May 10, 2018 at 2 pm. The family will receive friends at a reception immediately after the service.
