ELIZABETH CITY - Robert Clinton Saunders, age 91, died August 31, 2024. He was born in Pasquotank County, May 1, 1933. He was the son of the late William Dempsey and Maggie P. Saunders, the last survivor of nine brothers and sisters. He was a member of Corinth Baptist Church. He was a retired farmer and an Army Veteran. He enjoyed farming in Pasquotank, Chowan, and Washington counties. He worked at Hayes Aircraft in the early 1960's while continuing to farm. In the late 1960's, he left the farm to pursue his love for aviation. He attended Horizon Aviation Flight School of Charlottesville, VA, where he received a commercial pilot and flight instructor licenses. He then joined Wake Aero Sales & Service in Knightdale, NC as a flight instructor. He returned to the farm in the late 1970's and retired as a farmer in 1999. In his retirement, he built and flew a Vans Aircraft kit plane, which he enjoyed flying to as far away as Oklahoma. He was a past member of the Elizabeth City and Weeksville Lions Clubs.
He is survived by his loving wife of seventy years, Janet R. Saunders; a son, Steve (Sherry) Saunders; a daughter, Lorie (Jeff) Winslow; grandchildren, Lindsey (Sean) Lynam, Claire (Joshua) Clough and Leslie (John Austin) Hicks, Clint (Clair) Saunders, Tal (Gwyn) Hyman, Kelsey (Eric) McLemore, Jessi (Jonathan) Spear, and Zach (Brittany) Winslow; and twelve great grandchildren.
A funeral service was held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 3, 2024, at Twiford Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Greg Carr officiating. He was buried in New Hollywood Cemetery. Clinton's service was live streamed. Visit his obituary page at www.TwifordFH.com to view the live stream.
