Sylvia Sawyer Obituary

Sylvia (Scaff) Sawyer Camden - Sylvia Scaff Sawyer, 87, of Camden, passed away peacefully March 30, 2025, at Elizabeth City Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was born on February 1, 1938, to the late Raymond Judson Scaff and Barbara Willis Scaff.

She graduated from the Elizabeth City High School and was the former Nutrition Director for the Camden County Schools. She was a faithful member of Geneva Baptist Church in Camden. She taught Sunday School most of her adult life, was involved in WMU, taught many years of Vacation Bible School, and was a member of the choir. She was a culinary extraordinaire and known for all of her delicious creations. Her cake decorating skills were always a work of art. Most importantly, she was a woman of strong faith who loved her Lord and exemplified that in every aspect of her life. She loved fiercely and valued her family in immeasurable ways in her role as a wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

She is survived by her husband, Lawrence Sawyer of Camden; daughters, Terrie S. Gregory and husband, Greg of Elizabeth City, Lisa S. Anderson and husband, Randy of Camden; grandchildren, Britney Breci and husband, Tony of Benson, Kristal McCoy of Lynchburg, VA, Tiffany Cooper and husband, Blake of Camden, and Tyler Gregory of Camden; and five great-grandchildren. Her heart was very close to her great-grandson, Wesley James Cooper, who loved his "Grammie" and his Friday night dinners with her. She also is survived by a niece, Brenda Winslow (Jerel), and nephew, C.A. Cartwright, Jr. She was predeceased by a son, Lawrence Sawyer, Jr., a granddaughter, and great-granddaughter.

A visitation will be held from 6:00 - 8:00 pm on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, at Twiford Memorial Chapel. At all other times, the family will be at the home of Greg and Terrie Gregory, 638 Okisko Road, Elizabeth City, NC 27909. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, April 3, 2025, at Geneva Baptist Church, 812 NC Highway 343 North, Camden, NC 27921. A private burial will follow at West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

The family wishes to thank the wonderful individuals who cared for her with immense love during her most trying times; Toni Leslie, Ginger Badgley, and Linda and Larry Elmore. We also extend our thanks to Sentara Third Floor Nursing Staff, Albemarle Hospice, and Elizabeth City Health and Rehab.
