Wilford Toppin Obituary

ilford Nolan Toppin, 81, of the 100 block of Cisco Road, Tyner, N.C., died Friday, June 16, 2006, at Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville, N.C. Mr. Toppin was the son of the late Jennie Parker and Nolan Bunch Toppin. He was the husband of the late Mary Hendricks Toppin. Mr. Toppin is survived by his two sisters, Hazel Toppin Spruill and Shirley Toppin Kirby and her husband, Leslie, both of Edenton, N.C; six brothers, Guy Toppin and wife, Doris Jean, of Edenton, Earl Toppin and wife, June, of Wilmington, N.C., Garland Toppin and wife, Elsie, Haurice Toppin and wife, Shirley, Durwood Toppin and wife, Doris, all of Edenton, and Larry Toppin and wife, Martha, of Mississippi. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Mr. Toppin is survived by a very special friend, Blanche Davidson. He was predeceased by two brothers, Troy Toppin and Maurice Toppin; and one sister, Lillie Mae T. Beaman. Mr. Toppin served his country as a World War II veteran in the U.S. Navy Seabees. He was a ship's cook, second class, and also was assigned to the 31st Construction Battalion. He was self-employed as an electrical contractor after being discharged from the Navy. He enjoyed fishing and working in his garden. A celebration of Mr. Toppin's life will be held today, June 19, at 2 p.m. at Evans Funerals and Cremations Chapel, with the Rev. Thomas Biggs officiating. Burial will follow in Beaver Hill Cemetery, Edenton. The family received friends from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Sunday, June 18, at the Evans Chapel and at the residence on Cisco Road at all other times. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of choice. Evans Funerals and Cremations of Edenton is serving the Toppin family.
