Aileen Barbara Smith, born August 7, 1919, was a very beloved member of the Walnut Creek community. Aileen passed away peacefully on July 19, 2013. A retired teacher, she has contributed greatly to all her students as well as all who knew her. Her gift for teaching helped everyone around her. She taught locally at Meadow Homes School in Concord.
Aileen was the first daughter born to Nell and Bill Smith of Nevada. Aileen grew up in Carson City, Nevada and graduated from the University of Nevada at Reno. She began her teaching career in Ely, Nevada, She also taught in Vallejo, San Francisco and Seattle. Aileen married John M. Haslett in 1942 and had 40 years of happiness with him.They had many good friends and enjoyed boating, water skiing and attending Forty Niners games together. Aileen and her husband Jack were very close to their family and had many great times with their nieces and nephews. Since her retirement from teaching, Aileen has traveled extensively with the Retired Teachers. Aileen had good friends in many places: her sorority, her knitting friends, her coffee group and her church friends. She was a member of St John Vianney Catholic Church for many years.
Aileen will be greatly missed by all of her friends and family which include her sister, Dolores King, her brother-in-Law Tom Haslett and his wife Jacie, and many nieces and nephews on both sides of the family. Aileen was a very special lady and her legacy lives on in the beauty, kindness and love she expressed and imparted to all those around her.
A viewing and Rosary will be held at Hull's Walnut Creek Chapel, 1139 Saranap Avenue Walnut Creek on Monday July 29th from 5 to 8 pm with the Rosary at 7 pm. A funeral mass will be given at St. John Vianney Catholic Church on Ygnacio Valley Rd., Walnut Creek at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 30th. Interment at Oakmont Memorial Park. The family is very grateful for all the love shown for Aileen.
