GREENVILLE -- Michael Duane Guthrie, 63, Greenville, passed away Tuesday, July 9, 2024 at Ayden Health Care of Greenville. Graveside service 12 pm Friday, August 9, 2024 at Greenville Union Cemetery.

Many years ago I was shopping at our local Walmart. I had my things on the belt and was being rung up. I had tried to sneak into this lane because I had been on food stamps and didn't want to run into anyone I knew. When my purchase was totaled I was horrified to realize I over spent and didn't have the cash to cover it. I was panicking as I handed the cashier things to put back. Mike was behind me watching everything. I was so embarrassed and humiliated. He had seen the food stamp card. He had seen me putting things back. He had seen me scrounging in my purse for change....All at once he came forward and handed the cashier enough money to cover what I had. I said thank you, collected my things and rushed out. I never spoke to him about it again, and he never spoke to me about it either. I have thought of that moment several times over the years and have always been grateful for his generosity and his confidentiality.
