Elfriede Tingle Obituary
Elfriede passed peacefully Friday, May 6, 2016. She was surrounded and supported by her loving family and caregivers during the last days of her life. Elfriede was born on July 4, 1918 in Hof, Germany. When she was 16 her mother brought her to the United States where she resided in New York City. During that time, she went to night school to study English and traveled with her class to Miami and Washington, D.C. Just before WWII, she went back to Germany to take care of her beloved "Mutterla" (Grandmother) who passed away in 1942. Due to the war, she was unable to return to the U.S. and was unable to communicate with her mother for five years. During that time, she served in the German military as a Morse Code Operator. After the war, because of her knowledge of English, she worked for the U.S. military in Berlin, Germany. She met Riley F. Tingle and they married in April of 1949. Shortly thereafter, they returned to the United States. They moved to various military bases around the country as well as Germany. Together they had four children. They settled in San Pedro, California when her husband retired in 1966. She lived there from 1963 to 2006 at which time she moved to Houston, TX to be with her daughter. She lived independently in her apartment with a beautiful view of downtown Houston. When no longer able to care for herself, she was moved into one of her caregiver's guest house. She was loved and cared for by Ms. Diana, Ms. Linda, Ms. Veronica and Ms. Neva. Although she lived in many places in her life, she always considered San Pedro her home. Elfriede is survived by three children (and spouses): Anna Lee Fisher, Richard Tingle (Kim), Raymond Tingle (Mary Beth); seven grandchildren: Kristin (Walker) and Kara Fisher, Robert (Katie) and Brandi Tingle, Raymond "Little Ray" Jr., Stephanie (Ricky) and Justine Tingle and three great grandchildren: Riley, Peyton and Easton. She was preceded in death by her husband Riley and her son Riley Jr. Visitation will be held at McNerney's Mortuary Chapel on Wednesday, May 25, from 9 a.m. - 11 a.m. followed by a Funeral Service. Our condolences to the Tingle family. I grew up on Parker Street and was blessed to have so many great memories of all the neighbors and their stories. Most were up in age so we were all blessed with many wise stories always filled with Love, kindness and a teachable moment. Mamie and Mr. Lawrence, Mr. & Mrs. Tingle, Ernie Sommers, Mr. Harris, Midge & June Augostino, The Angulo's, The Merideth's, The Galea's, Mrs.Schafer, The O' Grady's, The Dill Family, Katie Murphy and family. My sympathies to the family. Mrs. Tingle was my neighbor after I moved to California and was always very kind. We had nice chats in the morning when I was walking my dog and she was carefully tending to her yard. A very nice lady.

So sorry for your loss.
I knew Mrs Tingle from downtown San Pedro where I worked at the time.she was very kind to me, and gave me weekly history lessons regarding WW2. I often thought of her. She will live on in memory.
