Frank Berkline Obituary

On February 11, 2009, Frank passed away from cancer with his loving wife and family by his side. Frank was born in Venice, California on April 19, 1917, to Jake and Edith Berkline. In 1919 the family moved to El Segundo where he graduated from high school in 1935 and then joined the U.S. Navy. He was honorably discharged in 1939,and was recruited by the El Segundo Police Department where he served for 32 years with the exception of a leave of absence to re-enlist at the beginning of WW II even though he was not required to do so. Frank said he was trained for war and had to go. He was honorably discharged at the end of the war and returned to the El Segundo Police Department until he retired in 1973 with a medical disability. He is survived by Peggy, his loving wife of 71 years, two daughters, Donna Haymond (Mike) and Kathy Hall (Jim); six grandchildren, Michael Haymond (Carol), Robert Haymond, Carrie Schaer (Will), Mackenzie Fletcher (Jarrod), Ryan Hall, and Melissa Hall; and four great-grandchildren, Evan and Emily Haymond, Kyle Haymond, Madelyn Schaer and many nieces, nephews, and friends. He is also survived by one sister, Ruth Senior of Leesburg, Virginia. He was predeceased by his parents; brothers, Clyde, Ralph, Ray; and a sister, Emma Jean. The family would like to thank his wonderful doctors, Dr. Mark Scholz and Dr. Richard Lam, and their staff at Prostate Oncology Specialists; the nurses at Daniel Freeman Marina del Rey Hospital; as well as Daniel and Maria, his caregivers, and the staff of Providence Trinity Care Hospice. At Frank's request no services will be observed and his ashes will remain at home until such time as his wife passes and they can be scattered together at sea. Donations in his memory may be sent to the El Segundo Police Department Association, Providence Trinity Care Hospice in Torrance, CA, or to American Martyrs Church in Manhattan Beach, c/o Monsignor Barry. Aunt Peg,

I have such fond memories of my Uncle Frank. I think I was the great niece who always fell for the chewed up cigar in the hand trick. He was such a wonderful man who will be greatly missed.

You are in our thoughts and prayers.

Much love,

Holly (Phillips) Falk, Doug, Camille and Ethan
