Jack Gillespie Obituary

Jack was born in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, on June 25, 1946. He spent his early years traveling in Canada with his father, Thomas Gillespie, who was a Nazarene minister, and his mother, Mary Jo Gillespie. At 13, he moved with his parents from Canada to Southern California. He attended Westchester High School and then when on to college at Valley State, now known as Cal State Northridge. To pay his college tuition, he worked at Benkins Van & Storage as a mover and as a baggage handler for Pan American Airlines. After graduating from college, he was able to take advantage of the Pan American perks and traveled around the world, creating some incredible memories before settling into his real estate career. He was one of the founders of South Bay Brokers, and over the course of his career, he was so well respected that he was given a life time achievement award from his colleagues in 2019. In his free time, Jack loved to spend time with his grandchildren, taste and collect wine, and enjoy dinners out with his wife, Maureen, and many friends. He was also an avid sports fan and particularly loved the Dodgers and Los Angeles Kings. Jack loved his church, American Martyrs, and especially Monsignor Barry. He was a one-of-a-kind person who had the ability to make everyone feel welcome. His charm and charismatic personality were unmatchedhe was never without a smile or words of advice. Businessman, mentor, friend, husband, father, father-in-law, and Papahe excelled at all of his roles, but always put his family above all else which to him was his greatest accomplishment. Jack is survived by his wife, Maureen, daughters, Claire and Maggie, sons-in-law, Chad Waldron and Shaun Wright, and grandchildren, Rowen and Renley Waldron and Emmie and Teddy Wright. Services for Jack Gillespie will be held on Friday, April 28, 2023, at 10:00 am at American Martyrs Church. The family requests light colored attire, no black. Jack was our real estate broker, neighbor and friend for many years when we lived in Manhattan Beach. After moving away, we continued to receive Christmas cards from Jack every year. Jack´s honesty, integrity and love of family were without question. Our condolences to Maureen, Claire and Maggie. We, too, will miss him.

We were so sad to hear the news. Jack was one of the kindest individuals we have ever known. He was thoughtful, compassionate, and just an all around wonderful human being. The world is worse off without him, but better because of him. He was a true icon of the South Bay and he was my first experience in buying a new home, which was such a smooth and pleasant endeavor. Thank you, Jack, for everything you've given to the community and the world. Rest in peace. You will be missed.

Jack was many things. Perhaps foremost, in particular during these days, it's comforting to know that he was a follower of Jesus. The Bible says in Matthew 7:16 "You will know them by their fruits". Here they are talking about prophets (I think true followers also) and how to recognize the good from the bad. God's Word goes on to say what those fruits are:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control-Galatians 5:22-23. Jack embodied these fruits of the spirit. He lived them...they lived within him. He was a good friend, is now and will be forever just as soon as I see him in Heaven. Will you? I know he'd want that.

Jack was my grandparents, Ken and Lillian Browning, neighbor for many years before my grandparents sold their Laural Avenue house and moved to Hawaii. He and Maureen were wonderful neighbors and so good to my grandparents. Because of Jack, he negotiated a wonderful price on their house to which it allowed them to buy their retirement home on the Big Island of Hawaii where they lived for many years. Jack never seemed to forget a face and would always say hello to my parents or myself when I we would run across him in town. Rest in peace, Jack.

I've known Jack for many years as a loan consultant and did several
RE loans for him and would see the Gillespie family at American Martyrs church.
He was truly a great man that will be sorely missed throughout the community where he has left a lasting footprint.

RIP Jack.
