James Darrel Darr

1939 - 2020

James Darrel Darr, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle passed away on December 3, 2020 at the age of 81. He was born on April 18, 1939 to James and Myrtle Darr in Los Angeles, California. Jim attended Belmont High School and graduated in 1957. He was drafted into the Army in 1962 and finished first in his class. He served for 2 years in Europe. Jim later attended Pierce College, where he played football, Santa Monica City College, and Long Beach State University. In 1980, he received a Master of Arts degree in Public Communications from Pepperdine University. After 25 years of service with the Los Angeles Police Department, Jim retired in 1990. He retired as Lieutenant in charge of the Asian Task Force. Jim had many lifelong loves - his family, golf, airplanes, and researching World War II. He managed to see every World War II movie ever made! Jim was very involved with his sons' sports activities when they were growing up. He was often their coach and was always there with his wife supporting them as spectators. Jim also loved Manhattan Beach and was a long time resident. He enjoyed walking his dogs around the neighborhood and chatting with the neighbors. Coffee was another love of his. He could be seen every morning for many years at the Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf with his group of friends. Jim was an avid runner. He ran in many MB Hometown Fair Runs, Police Olympics, and marathons. He often practiced for these events running in the streets of Manhattan Beach. In his later years, he and his wife enjoyed traveling with friends throughout Europe, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, and his favorite place, Hawaii. Jim is survived by his wife, Carole; their sons and spouses, James (Ashley) Darr, Kyle (Alyson) Darr; granddaughter, Reiko; brother, Jerry Darr; sister, Sue Eftekhari, and many nieces and nephews.
