Many years ago I had the honor of being a member of the Pelayo family. Mary was a beautiful strong woman and to me, the epitome of what a Mother should be. She influenced my life as she opened her heart and family to me. While much time has passed since we were last together - she always had and will forever hold a very special place in my heart. My heartfelt and deepest condolences to the Pelayo, Letuli, and Irvine Ohana..

We met Mary through her husband, Al, with whom I worked with at Rockwell. My wife, Terry and I were invited to join them on several of their Hawaiian functions. Al and Mary were both inspirational in their love of Hawaii and our country. Mary had a wonderful knowledge of the bible and our Lord. She has arrived home. We express our sorrow to Al and his family.

I met Mr. & Mrs. Pelayo when I spent the nights with Mickey & Dickey when we were kids. They used to go to St. John Chrisystom school when they lived, I think,on Grace St. in Inglewood in the '50's. Mr. & Mrs. Pelayo were always kind to me. I remember when Mrs Pelayo always had twinkies in the kitcken drawer and asked me if I wanted one. I remember we loved to play Hide & Seek with Teddy Boy cause he couldn't see well.I remember when we used to jump on the back of the ice cream truck that went by their house on 185th street. I remember knocking on their windows very early in the morning trying to wake up Mickey & Dickey so we could go surfing. I remember leaving my '49 Chevy on 185th st. beside their house because the rear end went out. The tow truck finally came & took it to the junk yard.I'm sure Mr. & Mrs. Pelayo remember a whole lot more of what we used to get into and do when we were growing up. I always had a great time and will cherish all the memories I have at the Pelayo's household.
Mrs. Pelayo, you will surly be missed here on earth. Bye for now!!!

Aunty Mary Pelayo opened her home and heart to so many, especially those of us that moved to the mainland and were homesick for our families and Hawai‘i. I will always cherish the memories we shared, the way her eyes twinkled when she spoke, her feisty spirit, her laughter and all the loving advice she gave me. She will always be in our hearts and memory... God smiled on all of us when he blessed us with aunty Mary... and now she is with Him in heaven, watching over all of us.

Our sincere thoughts and prayers to you all. Mary and Sonny were dinner guests at our home with mutual friends from Tahiti... We so enjoyed the evening and all these many years later can recall their love for each other and their "aloha" spirit. Also one evening we were guests at their home and I remember all the photos of the children and grandchildren and how proud they were.
God bless you all. Sam and Katie Wong, San Pedro

Aunty Mary was thrifty, determined, and generous. One of my very best memories of Aunty is when she taught the `Ahahui to debone one whole chicken. The bones was all out and you were left with the chicken meat and skin in one piece. It was awesome! Glad I to see her within the last few months. Another one of our libraries has gone up in smoke. Mama and I send our Aloha ma Alofa to `ohana ame hoaaloha.

Growing up, the Pelayo family lived across the street from our house and Mrs. Pelayo(Mary)and Mr. Pelayo (Al) always made us feel welcome in their home. They had their children, but did not mind all the other children that we would come visiting to play. I loved going over to their home and playing in their backyard which had a pond with big goldfish(Koi)and a map of the Hawaiian Islands. Their backyard was made out to be a tropical oasis. What a wonderful place. I will miss you Mrs. Pelayo, but the memory of you is in my heart.

Aloha to the Pelayo Ohana. So sorry to hear of the passing of "Auntie Mary." I had the pleasure of knowing Mary as she offered me a job at the flower shop that she owned...I believe it was called "Maile's Flower Shop." I learned a great deal about flowers during my short time at the flower shop. Auntie Mary was a sweet, gentle and wonderful woman who would welcome anyone and everyone. Cheryl and I send our deepest condolences and sympathy to you all. To the Pelayo Ohana, Hold on to the many precious memories of your Mom, Tutu and Auntie...You are in our thoughts and prayers.
