Nicholas Christensen Obituary

1961 - 2022 Nick Christensen, legendary surfer, commercial realtor and family man passed away October 30, 2022 after a courageous and lengthy battle with scleroderma and subsequent cancer. The youngest of four children born to Clair and Sylvia Christensen, "Nicky C" soon exhibited the confidence and positivity that would propel him through the fullest of lives. Growing up in Playa del Rey, Nick quickly excelled at surfing and beach volleyball, and also mastered the banjo and formed a popular band. Most importantly to him, he began a Christ-centered life. Early success in National Scholastic Surf Association surfing events led to a professional surfing career that took him across the globe to surf spots stretching from Hawaii to South Africa. Nick made lifelong friends wherever he visited. Nick concluded that competitive surfing was not the path for him and enrolled in UCLA. A Bruin for life and attracted to success once as a youngster he walked around Pauley and plopped down next to John Wooden for a chat Nick made the connections (friends, lots of friends) that would fuel both his real estate career and his passion for surfing. One friend was Sean Collins, founder of the Surfline surf forecasting service. Nick was both investor and marketing director when the company went online with the reports and surf cams that transformed the world of surf travel. He was inducted in the Hermosa Beach Surfing Walk of Fame this past spring. At the same time, Nick Christensen became one of the top salesmen of commercial real estate for CBRE, all the while surfing in front of his Manhattan Beach home, the Baja house he shared with his Del Rey bros and on annual trips to Tavarua. He never stopped working, closing deals despite pandemic and illness. And Nick never missed donning a costume for the annual beach volleyball tournament at Gillis. Beach volleyball led Nick to Riscilla his soulmate, playmate, volleyball partner and love of his life and they married in 2013. A year later their daughter Candace Rain was born and completed their family of Cole, Akea and Zoey. Family was everything to Nick and he was a constant at the many sports and school events his children participated in. Family joined Nick on his trips to surf spots and island resorts, including a recent trip to Costa Rica. That's how Nick lived, with no fear and the surety he would be with his God when it was time. Funeral Service will be held at 11am, Journey of Faith Church, 1243 Artesia Blvd., Manhattan Beach, Friday, November 11. Celebration of Life immediately following at Nick's home.

Jews have a word for a man like Nick: "mensch".
I believe it is the highest compliment a man can pay to another man. An individual with kindness, caring, empathy, integrity and honor. Nick was all of this and more.
I have known Nick for decades - in fact I sponsored the red-hot surfer version of Nick with my brand Instinct back in the '80s. Over the years he evolved into a university graduate, successful businessman and dedicated family man while never losing his deep love for surfing. I know that God often takes the good ones early and I am so sorry to see the passing of my friend but his spirit will always burn brightly in the hearts of the many people whose lives he touched. Nick - we will miss that that big smile, like a beautiful sunrise, warming us with its glow. My love and prayers go out to his family and friends.

Deepest sympathy to Nick´s family and his son Cole. He was a wonderful coach to our son and made sports fun. An inspiration to all children to focus on having fun. Will never forget the kindness and how inclusive he was.
