Robert Sandus Obituary

Robert "Bob" Sandus

Robert "Bob" Sandus, passed away peacefully on June 11th, 2014 with family members by his side. Bob was born in Waukegan, IL September 4th, 1944 and then moved to Manhattan Beach in 1948 after father, Al Sandus, accepted a job with McDonnell Douglas. Bob's mother, Lois, cared for the family also including Bob's brother, Jimmy. Bob learned sign language to communicate with his mother and father due to both parents being deaf. Growing up in the South Bay, Bob quickly adapted to the beach culture, learning how to surf on a 100lb balsa board at "Marine Street" and worked on hot rods in his mom and dads driveway. Later on Bob joined surf clubs the Dapper Dan's and Bay Cities. Bob attended Aviation High School graduating in 1963. In his most recent years, Bob cruised around in a 1939 Ford Woody, a car he owned originally in high school, and was an active member of the So. Cal. Woody Club. For 30 years, Bob worked in the Aerospace Industry as a Manufacturing Technician and worked on special projects such as the Stealth Bomber. Bob's passion was his family. He is survived by wife, Katie Sandus; son, Scott (Junko) Sandus; daughter, Kim (Jerry) Vilicich and granddaughter, Noelle Vilicich. A paddle out ceremony will be held at Saturday, June 28, 2014 at 8am at Marine Street in Manhattan Beach. Services will be held Saturday, June 28, 2014 at noon at the Portofino Inn and Hotel, 260 Portofino Way, Redondo Beach, CA 90277. In lieu flowers, donations may be made to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Please sign the guest book at www.dailybreeze.com/obits.

Katie, Scotty and Kim, The Sandus family was like an extended family for us Wormleys who lived nearby. Our parents were close friends and we visited often. It was a joy to see each of you come into their lives. How they loved you all! Grandma Lois was always the doting mother and grandma even to us kids. Grandpa Al loved to tease and what a skilled craftsman/artisan he was! Your Uncle Jim/Jimmy used to tell us he hated kids... but I think that was because we annoyed him. Yet your larger than life Bob/Bobby was always the big charming older brother with his whimsical smile and booming jolly voice. He always made everybody feel welcomed and loved his family! As you know best, he was loving, lovable and always so kind. I hope you are comforted by fond memories and all that love too. We are sad to hear of his passing and are praying for you all now. God bless you all. Carol, Molly, Mark, and Bernice Wormley

Katie, Scott and Kim, I am without words upon hearing of Bob's passing. We no longer live in the South Bay so did not hear until recently. Bob was such a kind loving and generous soul. I'm pretty sure the Plumeria plant he gave me 20 years ago is still blooming in that yard. May you all be blessed with many sweet memories. Our love and hearts are with you during these tender times.

Dear Katie and family, I was very sad to read of Bob's passing. My condolences to your whole family. I met Bob at our office which was in MB near The Castle. Bob who is so friendly and talkative, found out we did digital printing. We did some prints for him in trade in 2011. Artwork that was for his garage, auto themed. When our office moved he helped us get rid of some metal fixtures and would stop in and check on our progress. I always enjoyed talking to him and learning about the local history of MB. My daughter and I got to sit in the Woody one year at the Old Hometown Fair. I have a photo of Bob and Katie sitting near it. Thank you Bob for your friendship! You will be missed! Sincerely, Chris Abbe, Nash Editions, Torrance, CA

Katie, Sorry to find out about Bobs passing. I always enjoyed our conversations through the years and some of our memories were inseparably linked from high school football through the times at the Blue Book, Players and other 'el porto' nightspots in the '70s. He was always good for a smile and more. Sincerely, John Post
