Dan Culberson Obituary

Dan Culberson, a veteran of the Army and IBM, fraternity president, film reviewer, journalist and author, died at his home in Boulder, CO on September 6, 2020. He published several books, including An Atheist's Handbook. In the days before he passed from complications associated with cancer, Dan told friends and family that he would "try to let them know" from the afterlife if he turned out to be wrong about his atheism. "It's unlikely" he said, with a characteristic sly grin. He was 79. Dan was born January 7, 1941 in Carmel, CA to George and Mamie Ruth (Meek) Culberson. He grew up all over the U.S. and Europe and attended high school in Colorado Springs, CO. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa in 1963 with a B.A. in English literature in the Honors Program from the University of Colorado, Boulder, where he was president of the Pi Kappa Alpha social fraternity. Dan's spent three years in the U. S. Army, 1963-1966, during which time he was a journalism instructor for the Defense Information School at Fort Slocum, NY and a Public Affairs writer, and staff writer and photographer for Army in Europe magazine. In 1967 he joined IBM as a programming writer and editor, an engineering editor and instructor of editing, writing and graphics, retiring in 1992. Dan was passionate about film and reviewed movies from 1972 to 2014 for newspapers, magazines, radio stations and TV programs. He also acted in numerous local plays with the Nomad Players and the Upstart Crow Theater Group. He was named a Boulder Pacesetter in 1985 by the BOULDER DAILY CAMERA in the first year of that program. After retirement he published three books, including An Atheist's Handbook; Plastic Man: A Novel of the Sixties; and The Searcher. Dan loved the mountains. He spent over 40 years living in the mountains outside of Boulder and took annual ski trips to Vail, CO. Dan was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his first wife, Helen (Christman) McKeown, (married 1964, divorced 1974); his son Noel Culberson (Shina) and two grandchildren Emilia and Declan of Boulder, CO; his daughter Laura Knapp (Steve), and two grandchildren Langston and Lachlan of Highland Park, IL; his brother Darryl of Colorado Springs; his cousins Paul Belew of Aurora, CO and Lou Jean Burleson of Floydada, TX. Donations in Dan's honor can be made to KGNU Community Radio (https://give.kgnu.org/) or the Upstart Crow Theatre Company (www.theupstartcrow.org/support/donate/ ).

I remember Dan very fondly from our 18 months or so of public access TV in Boulder called Videoactive, 1990-91. Dan & I collaborated on many products weekly & did a movie critique show together.
He was really cool and although 10 years older he seemed younger. I really liked his wit and easy presence. He made us all feel comfortable with his experience and expertise as a creative producer and yes, a leader. Dan led more by example than preaching but had a charm and way with words that always made me hungry for more. But Dan´s accomplishments remind me how little I knew of him those 30+ years ago then. He was kind, generous, thoughtful and had a big heart and a devilish sense of humor I appreciated. I believe his "soul" or true essence still lives on in some form. It is almost like he was psychically contacting me but I did purchase his book "Plastic Man" online and hoping by reading it I will get to know more about him from his writing.

To his children and grandchildren I send my condolences. Until Dan became ill, he had interests in so many topics. I knew him from the Boulder Heretics founded in 1993 which he ran for a a few decades, we had lively debates and of course we would always discuss politics, religion and movies. He was very clear thinking until his death, just the way he would have wanted.

Was a member of his group on Delphi for many years and chatted with him via posting in his group. So sorry to just hear about his passing. He was a delight to read.

My sincere condolences to Dan's family. Although we've never met in person, I've 'known' Dan for a number of years as a fellow forum host and regular contributor on Delphiforums message boards. Dan was a great writer & hosted a number of forums on topics ranging from tv & entertainment, politics, religion, creative writing & a even Baby Boomers forum. His wit, humor, knowledge and insight informed, delighted, entertained and inspired us all. RIP Dan. You will be missed.

Dan Culbertson and I worked on quite a number of theatre productions in the Boulder scene in the late 1970’s. I always enjoyed his sense of humor and his movie reviews. I ran into Dan at the post office last year
and we laughed and chatted and joked about days gone by. He hadn’t changed.
Thanks for the memories Dan.

Dan would come in to KGNU Radio every Thursday afternoon to record his "Hotshots" Show and we would chat- about what movie he was reviewing- about what movie I was planning on seeing that weekend- and our personal lives. He really loved his grandchildren!! As his health deteriated he would come in less often, and then he had to give it up totally. One time at my birthday party, he brought we one of those life size plastic heads- he WAS into theater. Anyhow I keep it on the top of my refrigerator and put a "seasonal" hat on it. The last time I saw Dan was at the KGNU 40th Anniversary Celebration. He did look pretty fragile then...

Dan, I miss our talks about things political and societal. Thank you for sharing your last few weeks with me via phone calls. And, thanks for the years of little jokes between us. My one question to you is, "Is it heavenly enough for you?"
