David Hummer Obituary

David Graybill Hummer died on December 17th at Boulder Community Health after a brief illness. He was born on November 4th, 1934, the eldest of four, to Lillian Graybill and John Hummer. After high school he attended Carnegie Tech where he received his B.S. and Master's before moving on to the University College England and receiving his PhD in Astrophysics in 1961. In that year he met his wife Janet Wood and a year later their son Julius was born. Returning to the States in 1965, David became a fellow of JILA, the Joint Institute of Laboratory Astrophysics, located on the CU campus. Around that time he began the construction of their house in Pine Brook Hills where Janet and Julius still live today. In 1979 David opened Boulder Brewing Company, the nation's oldest surviving craft brewery, a move he later described as "the most irresponsible thing I ever did." There are now in excess of 4,000 craft breweries nationwide. Through the 80's, David and Janet had severeal sabbaticals to the Max Plank Institute in Munich which were a source of great enjoyment for them both. Returning to CU, David retired in 1995 but always kept an office in JILA. His great passion was always music and he took great satisfaction as a librarian of the orchestral music at the CU Music School and as a member of its advisory board. A memorial service will be held at Boulder Beer, 2880 Wilderness Place in Boulder, from 2-5 p.m. on Wednesday, January 6, 2016.

Remembering his smile and laugh. Such a great musical talent and sweet soul

Dave was an extraordinary Renaissance man. Tom and I were invited to dinner one evening to their home, where we were lavished with delicious food and beer, and then Janet served a gorgeous fruit flan dessert. She accidently dropped it, but it was delicious just the same. Dave had a beautiful laugh and twinkling eyes. He built his own harpsichord and it was a delightful instrument. He loved Janet so much and
gleefully reported their cross country road trip love affair. I loved being involved in the birth of Boulder Beer as a neighbor to the co-founder Stick Ware, and later helped in the brewery at Al Nelson's farm in Hygiene. Dave was an inventive delightful man, and I know Janet and Julius miss him terribly. Plus Dave and I share the last name. Somewhere back in the Hummer line, we may be distant cousins! Sending love and gratitude.

Dave, you were so talented and adventurous. I loved your handmade harpsichord, and I enjoyed working with Boulder Beer at its inception.
Thank you for all you contributed.

David Hummer hired me as a software developer and computer support liaison in 1966 which provided me with 6 wonderful years of enjoyment of the JiILA and Boulder communities., He was a great boss and good friend. Martin and I send our condolences to Janet and Julius.

David was one of the most amazing men I've ever known, with an intellectual appetite and curiosity that would be the envy of anyone. I will miss him, and send my condolences to Julius and Janette.
