Herman Sloat Obituary

Herman Irving "Sonny" Sloat, 86, died Tuesday, December 30, 2014. A private family graveside service will be held at Green Mountain Cemetery. A Memorial Service will be held at Har Hashem, 3950 W. Baseline Rd. Boulder, CO 80303, at 11:00 A.M on Monday, January 5, 2015. Sonny was born on May 9, 1928 in Brooklyn, New York to Samuel Sloat and Molly Gersh Sloat. On June 5, 1954 Sonny married Iris Mehler in the Bronx, NY. Sonny was a member of the National Dry Cleaning Association. He also served in the National Guard. After owning and operating his own dry cleaning store in New York for 23 years, Sonny and his wife Iris decided to forge a new frontier. They packed up their lives and moved to Boulder, Colorado in 1977. Sonny was known as "King Knish" of Pearl Street in the early 90's. The locals appreciated his generosity and kind word. For many years Sonny volunteered his time to Meals-on-Wheels delivering food to those that were homebound. After the loss of his beloved Iris, Sonny moved to Golden West where he was loved and respected, developing many friendships. His final home was at Lifecare of Longmont where he made people laugh and would share stories of his life, love for his family and his artwork. He will be greatly missed by all that knew and loved him. Sonny is survived by: his daughter, Michelle (David) Henzel of Niwot; his sons, Scott (Jan) Sloat of Lafayette, and Curtis Sloat of Boulder;. Also survived by 7 Grandchildren, Tracey (Sean) O'Donohue, Ashley & Michael Henzel, Samantha, Jacob, Hannah and Jordan Sloat; and great grandchild, Emilia Iris O'Donohue. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to: Mental Health Partners, 1333 Iris Ave. Boulder, CO 80304. Please share thoughts, memories and condolences at legacy.com/obituaries/dailycamera

Scott, Curtis and Michelle - I will always have great memories of your Dad (and Mom) and all the good times at the house on Detroit where they always made us feel welcome. Always be grateful to him for letting us work(?) at the cleaners on Eagle Ave, almost like a real job. He was a good guy and raised a terrific family of whom I'm sure he was very proud.

"Sonny" was indeed a sunny presence while he was here with us at Golden West. Whether working out, playing cribbage, painting--he quickly became known to all of us. He is remembered fondly. The family is in our thoughts and prayers.

Michelle, I am so sorry to hear of your father's passing. I know how hard it is. I read the obituary and saw that your father delivered Meals on Wheels. My father did that until he was 86. Hang in there pal.

Michelle,

So sorry to hear of your father's death. Your kind and tender love for him was only as daughter can express. He was a fun man, a true gentleman.

Our condolences,

What will we miss the most?? Sonny's sense of family, his tremendous bear hugs, his smile and warmth, his compassion, his artistic talents...in other words, his passion for life!! We will miss him terribly, as we miss Iris, but we are better people for having been able to share his love.
