Inge Sargent Obituary

Inge E. Sargent was born in Austria to Franz and Elfriede Eberhard. In 1951, while a student at the University of Graz, Inge was chosen as one of the first Austrian Fulbright students to spend a year at Colorado Woman's College in Denver. While there, she met her first husband, Sao Kya Seng of Burma, a student at the Colorado School of Mines. They married in 1953 and traveled to the Shan States of Burma where they planned to live. As their ship arrived in Rangoon, Inge discovered that her new husband was also the ruling Prince of Hsipaw, a large Shan State east of Mandalay. Inge thrived there as the Mahadevi of Hsipaw State, and the couple had two daughters, Mayari and Kennari. Together, Inge and her husband helped improve the lives of the Shan people; education, medical assistance, agricultural improvements and social equality were on the top of their list. However, in March 1962, the Burmese military put an end to their dreams and staged a devastating Coup, resulting in the assassination of Inge's husband. After two years of house arrest, Inge was able to flee with her children and return to her native Austria. Two years later, Inge and her daughters returned to Colorado where she went back to school and received B.A. and M.A. degrees from the University of Denver and the University of Colorado. In Boulder, she met Howard (Tad) Sargent whom she wed in 1968. She taught German and English at Fairview High School from 1970 - 1987 and at Centennial Jr. High. After taking early retirement from teaching, Inge wrote "Twilight over Burma" about her life in the Shan States of Burma; Tad was her editor and the University of Hawaii her publisher. Inge and Tad never forgot the Shan people who were fleeing from the Burmese army. Together, they founded Burma Lifeline, a (501(c)(3)) charity, to help these refugees survive. Inge and Tad ran Burma Lifeline for eleven years until they turned it over to Partners Asia, another charity, which continues their work. In 2015, a film also titled "Twilight over Burma", was made about Inge's life in The Shan States; it is widely shown in German speaking countries. The producers decided to make both, English and German language versions of the film. A prize-winning Documentary, titled "The Last Mahadevi", also in English and German, was made in 2000. In her Shan name, The "Sao Thusandi Leadership Award" has been given annually for 15 years to a young Shan Person with exceptional leadership potential. In Boulder, Inge was a longtime Hospice volunteer for the Bereaved Parent Group and for school-related activities. She received numerous awards as a teacher and as a humanitarian. Inge was preceded in death by Tad in 2022, her husband of over 53 years. Survivors include two daughters, Mayari (Dave), and Kennari (David), grandchildren Daniel and Hanna, her brother Gerd (Margit), a sister, and many nephews and nieces in Austria; she also leaves behind many Shan people who were very dear to her heart. The Neptune Society is handling the necessary arrangements. There will be no service. The family may hold a private gathering at a later date to honor the lives of Inge and Tad. I worked with Tad at NOAA years ago prior to my retirement in 2006. I met Inge at social occasions - they were both lovely people and I have a copy of her book and enjoyed reading about her experiences.
Rest In Peace Inge and Tad.

Inge and Tad were our neighbors on Endicott Dr. for many years. One of my fondest memories is Inge talking to my daughter´s brownie troop, regaling them with stories of her life in Burma. She knew just the right tone to set, and even brought over a snake skin she wrote about in her boo. In other generous acts she came several times to talk to my history classes at Fairview High School. She and Tad were kind and thoughtful neighbors, contributing immensely to our community. We miss them.

Frau Sargent was my German teacher at Fairview. She was very kind and patient. Her classes were my Favorite classes. I didn't find out much later that she had once been a Princess and I bought her book.
I am very sorry about her passing, she was a Wonderful Person! Eileen

I'm so surprised to read that my friend, Inge, passed away, because I recently saw her in the Table Mesa Whole Foods. We spoke and she seemed well, as we touched on how we could talk more another day when we had time. Yes, that is regrettable, that we didn't speak again. Inge was a my colleague at Centennial in the 70's. Her friend Betty Williams told me that I should meet her--that she was once a princess and ate from gold plates. But she was more interesting than that, even, a lovely friend who entertained my elderly mother when she was in town, baking a fabulous struedel, that her daughter, Mayari made the whipped dream for. She gathered together her German teaching friends to support me in a school board bid. And she introduced me to being supportive of Burma, going to her films and talks, and coming to speak at my book club. Our paths crossed many times--more recently whe she helped a family of Burmese immigrants I befriended all because I knew her. When I mentioned her name, they gasped in recognition. I'm so lucky to have known her and send my condolences to her family. If there is a service at any time, I would love to know about it. Sincerely, Sandy Backlund

Frau Sargent taught me German my sophomore and senior years of high school. For my junior year, she helped me win a scholarship to study abroad in Germany. She was always a great encouragement to me, and a fascinating, caring human being. She is greatly missed.

My daughter studied German with her in Boulder. We had been contacted by Vienna news to locate her and try to contact her because of her history in Vienna. My condolences. She was quite a person.

I remember Frau Sargent well as she was my German teacher at Fairview for three years. She was always calm and genuine and you could see her passion for teaching in her interactions with her students. I remember her telling us about her experiences in Berma and I have repeated the story many times during my life to friends and family. It had that big of an impact on me. Interesting enough I have spent the last 30 years working in Spanish speaking countries but the little German I still remember was from her efforts and amazing German class. She will be missed and she was truly a wonderful human being.

Mrs. Sargent was my Fairview HS German teacher in 1976. I was not aware of her story until 20 years later, yet during HS I just knew she was an incredibly kind individual. Many times since reading her autobiography I have thought (deeply) about her courage, heartbreak, intelligence and compassion. I have shared her story with many others. Someone like Mrs. Sargent will never be forgotten. She was truly an exceptional person.
