Kevin Mahoney Obituary

Although Kevin Mahoney was often hard at work in his office, he also loved being in the great outdoors--walking, hiking, skiing, camping, and traveling the world. He was an avid sports fan his entire life and never missed his children's swim team meets or soccer, basketball, or lacrosse games. He also never missed their school events, such as graduations, music programs, and theater productions. Kevin's greatest love was his family and being with his wife, Ellen, his daughter, Erika, and his son, Drew. Words that describe him include kind, hardworking, lighthearted, caring, and dedicated. His smile could light up a room. He will be dearly missed by his family and his many close friends and colleagues. We will hold him in our hearts forever, knowing that he is always with us and we are never alone. Kevin was born in Winnipeg, Canada, on December 5, 1959, and grew up in Crystal Lake, Illinois. He graduated from Crystal Lake Community High School in 1978. During school Kevin was active in the Boy Scouts of America. In 1974 he received the Medal of Merit from the National Court of Honor. He also earned the Eagle Scout award in 1977, which is the highest achievement in Boy Scouts. Kevin worked for many years as a cook at Crystal Lake's Golden Bear Restaurant where he found his passion for the hospitality industry. He then earned a Bachelor of Science in Hotel Administration in 1982 from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. That same year he landed his first job as a corporate trainee at the New York City Sheraton Centre Hotel. In 1983 Kevin moved west and took on numerous managerial roles at the historic Huntington Sheraton Hotel in Pasadena, California, where he met Ellen. Wanting to move into hotel development, Kevin landed key managerial positions at Pannell Kerr Forster, and Kenneth Leventhal & Company in Los Angeles. In 1995 he accepted a senior investment manager position with the Amstar Group in Denver and moved his family from the Bungalow Heaven neighborhood in Pasadena to Boulder, Colorado. For years he was president of the Hotel Asset Management & Investment Advisors organization. In 2005, Kevin became the Chief Operating Officer for Stonebridge Companies in Denver. After retiring from Stonebridge, he volunteered with the Boulder County Meals on Wheels program. He also volunteered as a board member on the Boulder Beverage Licensing Authority. Kevin spent many cherished moments with his family traveling to Maui, Hawaii, and other majestic places such as the Grand Teton and Yellowstone national parks. It was his goal to visit all the national parks in the U.S. Kevin is survived by his wife, Ellen Mahoney, his son, Drew Mahoney, his daughter, Erika (Mahoney) Bates and her husband, Brandt Bates; his mother, Patricia Travis and her partner, Ken Slavik, his brother, Michael Mahoney and his son, Jackson Mahoney; his step-siblings, Rick Travis, Tom Travis, Kathy Travis Swanger, and Beth Travis Costello; his aunts, Joan Sifferle and Valerie Bowman; his uncle, Chuck Brophy; and his stepmother, Susan Mahoney. Kevin is preceded in death by his grandparents, his father, Henry Mahoney, his stepfather, Richard Travis, and his sister, Brenda Mahoney. A memorial service will be held at Grace Commons Church in Boulder, Colorado, on Saturday, August 14 at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please reach out to someone in need.
