Lucy Batton

1956 - 2022

Lucy was born in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota on 2/16/1956. She passed peacefully Monday, September 19th, surrounded by her loving partner, family, friends and Mary Chapin Carpenter singing her home. Lucy lived in Fargo, ND up until she moved to Boulder Colorado after the loss of her mother Charlotte Batton to breast cancer. Lucy had a very special connection to her grandparents, George and Hattie who owned a small lake cabin on Cotton Lake outside of Detroit Lakes. Lucy shared stories of "going to the lake on the weekends" and how much she loved fishing with her Grandpa. Lucy has always felt in her heart she was a "Lake girl". She carried her ND and Minnesotan roots with her. Lucy attended middle school at Casey Middle School and graduated from Fairview High School in 1974. After high school Lucy went to University of Colorado in Greeley obtaining her Bachelor's Degree in Communications. She later returned to UNC to obtain her Master's Degree in Gerontology. Lucy started her career very early as a housekeeper/EVS staff member at Boulder Community Health. She worked her way up to become the Director of Environmental Services at BCH. She often talked about how much she enjoyed working in the "laundry and singing with the ladies as they folded all the linens". Lucy enjoyed hiring, training and supporting her staff. She had a natural talent for housekeeping and laundry management, she would refold the towels and sheets at home and Amy would just smile! Her next career was working for the City of Boulder. She initially worked in Parking Services Department and then had an opportunity to work in the Police Department as a Property and Evidence Technician. Lucy felt this new opportunity was a "dream job for her". She loved the education, learning and working to support the Police Officers and department in her role. Lucy thrived in this job. She unfortunately needed to take a medical retirement after being diagnosed with Wegener's Granulomatosis Vasculitis. Lucy developed significant health issues in 2009 when she was diagnosed with Wegener's Granulomatosis - a rare autoimmune condition. Lucy was in aggressive treatment for this condition for several years and went through chemotherapy treatment and several procedures. She eventually went into "remission" but did continue with ongoing symptoms and side effects. Lucy and Amy went into "Warrior stance" to help Lucy navigate and move through this rare illness. Amy remained her constant companion and advocate throughout all of her health challenges and stayed by her side getting her to a place of comfort and peace during her recent hospital stay. Lucy met her partner and "soul companion" Amy Brown, through some friends at Boulder Community Health and they began their life together in 1997, celebrating their 25th year anniversary this summer. They were married in their beautiful back yard in Boulder on September 3rd, 2005, and then were "officially "married April 17th at the Boulder County Courthouse along with their dear friends Rob and Bud. Lucy brought her love of Springer Spaniels to Amy and together they rescued and raised several Spaniels, they were known as the "Spaniel girls' in the neighborhood. They loved to travel and find new places to explore and spent several summers at Big Pine Lake in Minnesota. It was "Lucy's happy place, boating, fishing and catching those walleyes. Lucy and Amy loved the rhythm of lake life and watching the sunsets over the lake. Another of Lucy's favorite trips was traveling to NYC to see her favorite singer of all time, Mary Chapin Carpenter at the Lincoln Center. She arranged this trip with her dear friends from high school. Lucy and Amy loved spending time with family and with their amazing community of friends. As Lucy's health changed, they came to enjoy and appreciate a quieter life together at home, playing cribbage, listening to music, taking walks, and time with their beloved pets. Lucy valued and cherished her community. She maintained connections with people across the years of her life. Lucy faced the challenges and changes in her health condition and impacts to her daily life with grace, humor and fierce resilience, channeling her Viking spirit. Lucy had a deep sense of faith and belief that our lives read like a story, and we live through each chapter in the best way we can. The enormous love, support, care and assistance Lucy and Amy receive through their community has continued and is deeply appreciated. Lucy's Celebration of Life will be held Friday October 28th from 1:00-4:00 pm at Willow Farm in Hygiene, CO. This will be an outdoor ceremony with Reverend Beverly Fest officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Boulder Community Health Red Lipstick Foundation or Emergency Family Assistance of Boulder.
