Mary Madden Obituary

Mary Agnes "Aggie" Ruh Madden died in the early morning of Tuesday June 25, 2019 of Alzheimer's Disease. Born July 6, 1939, Aggie grew up in the Edison Park neighborhood of Chicago, IL; she attended St. Scholastica's High School and married Roland Madden on December 30, 1961. The couple relocated to Boulder in 1967. While raising a family, Aggie attended seven separate colleges in earning her degrees - a BA in English and a MA in Education. She was involved in education throughout her professional life - as teacher, administrator, and as Director of Student Retention Services at CU Boulder for 20 years. All her life, Aggie shared her amazing vitality and joie de vivre with others. Proud and loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, Aggie dedicated her generosity to fostering circles of people, enthusiastically bringing together and preserving communities (large and small) of positive purposes. Aggie had a magical excitement in discovering others and a sustaining faith in the power of shared humanity. A restless, creative, inquisitive, determinedly optimistic spirit, in retirement Aggie traveled extensively to all corners of the world; was an accomplished watercolorist (aggiemadden.com); and most enjoyed time spent with her beloved Rol in their homes in Boulder and, just up the hill from the open ocean, in Carlsbad, CA. Mary Agnes is survived by her husband Roland; her sister Kathleen (Jim) Peterson of Barrington, IL; daughters Kathleen of Bakersfield, CA and Mary Margaret of Las Vegas, NV; sons John (Christine Richards) of Richland Center, WI and Michael (Kath) Madden of Boulder; and eight grandchildren Thomas, Molly, Reilly, John, Roland, James, Kathleen, and Emily. A visitation will be held at Crist Mortuary from 2 - 6 PM on Sunday July 7, 2019. A funeral mass will be held on Monday July 8; further details can be found at www. cristmortuary.com. In lieu of flowers consider memorial donations to The Alzheimer's Association (alz.org) or The Sierra Club.

I miss her so....

July 8, 2019

My first memory of Aggie was when she showed up at our door after we first moved into our house on Findlay Way in 1972. She brought us cookies and information about your family written on IBM cards. She was the best neighbor anyone could ever hope to have. The world was richer for her presence. I'm grateful to have known her. RIP, Aggie.

I had the pleasure of getting to know Aggie when she was the Director of Student Retention Services. I knew her to be enthusiastic, honest, smart, and forward-thinking. Whenever I was in a meeting with various people from the campus, I could always count on Aggie to speak up for students and how any policies we were discussing would impact students. She was passionate about students and for doing whatever she could to help them be successful. This was long before student retention was on the radar of the various departments on campus. Aggie had a great sense of humor, a wonderful smile and she was always upbeat. Long after she left CU, her ideals and her teachings about student retention stayed with many of us as we worked to improve the college experience for the students. Thank you Aggie for all that you did.

Aggie was an amazing colleague. I remember when she started the retention services offices and how passionately she did that work from he beginning. She was unfailingly upbeat, always that smile, a keen sense of humor and a passion for student success back in the day when that success was assumed and/or ignored when it didn't materialize. Although I haven't seen here for 30 years or so, those days are vividly seared in my memory as happy moments in my professional life. May she rest in peace -- a peace well-deserved!

So so sorry to hear this! Aggie and I volunteered at Mesa Elementary; Kathleen and son Andy went from elementary school through Fairview high school together. Aggie and I both worked at CU then for years - she was a marvelous, marvelous person and friend. Oh my. - Pat Muckle

Ah, dear Aggie. We met in 1953 when we began high school at St. Scholastica Academy. And what fabulous years those were. You & I & Rol double dated for SSA'S senior prom & a few years later I was a bridesmaid for you when you married Rol. Then when the kids were raised & we had more time, you, Mary Ellen & I, the three Musketeers, got together every two years in Boulder, Philadelphia, Morton Grove or Carlsbad. I shall miss your infectious laugh, spirit of adventure, kindness & loyal friendship. May your spirit soar to the next dimension, my dear friend. Godspeed, Aggie!
