Michael Dana Tanner. Mike Tanner. The Tanman. What a great friend he was! Mike had another nickname; it was the "Tanner Factor". This Factor was Mike's ability to make the good times even better. And he could make the bad or sad times better or happier. Very few people in the world possess such a quality. But Mike did. And this world is a diminished place without him. I first met Mike in 1973 when the Colorado Buffs were in Lincoln to play my Nebraska Cornhuskers-- this annual football weekend started a life long friendship that usually included a football game, golf or a trip to Aspen or Estes Park. Plus add in some Notre Dame football games or golf at Lake Geneva when Mike was living back here in the Chicago area. Such great memories. And the solid gold trait that Mike had was his love of life and his desire to help others whenever and wherever he could. It's up to us who knew him to step up with his spirit as our guide and carry on with the same deep and abiding religious faith that he had. Mike is gone now. But remember that's only temporary. As the Irish Blessing tells us "Death is nothing at all. I have only slipped away to the next room. I am I and you are you. Whatever we were to each other, That, we still are." May God Bless Mike Tanner.

Tan Man was a coach at Fairview high school during our 1987 championship year. Those of us who are on the team together share this once in a lifetime bond of passion and fortitude.
We all have Great memories from that year. I’ll never forget Coach Tanner stating with such conviction “it’s a great Day to be alive” each and every day before practice as we all stood quietly in line on a cold wet grassy field and stretched getting ready for practice.
It was a great lesson for a 17-year-old trying to find his way; to be grateful for every day we have with each other. It’s a lesson I’ll never forget. Thank you Coach Tanner. Im a better person because of you. God bless you.

I met Mike on November 3rd 1973 prior to the CU-Nebraska football game in Lincoln. We were fast friends and I sat with the Colorado group of friends for the game. Lord, did we ever have a great time! Dave Dunnigan and I went out to Boulder to spend Thanksgiving with Mike and his family and as students at Nebraska we were amazed at the beauty of CU and The Flatirons.
Mike introduced us to many Colorado students and we had wonderful times over the next six years meeting up for the Colorado-Nebraska games in Lincoln and Boulder. Everyone in Lincoln liked Mike and they always asked me "when is Tanner coming back?"
Mike was so generous and looked out for his friends and this is why there are so many heavy hearts mourning Mike's passing.
Connie and Cydney, I wish to express my sincere condolences to you for your loss. I was very fortunate to have Mike as my friend and I will miss my CU friend and may perpetual light shine upon him.
