Richard Hayward Obituary

Richard Lee Hayward passed away on November 21, 2021 after a lengthy ordeal with Alzheimer's Disease. He was born September 3, 1933 in Terre Haute, Indiana to parents, Charles and Bessie (Young) Hayward. He married Beth Thomas in 1956 in Terre Haute, then moved to Colorado where Dick worked at Arapahoe Chemical Company which became Syntex Chemicals. He was honored in "Who's Who in the West" for his volunteer work with Attention Homes, Boy Scouts of America, and overseas mission trips to Haiti and Alaska. Dick loved genealogy, spending countless hours traipsing through cemeteries before the internet made searching armchair friendly. He was excited to find his ancestor's 1635 marriage record on a trip to England. He enjoyed traveling all over the world, ending with his final trip to Iceland and Greenland. Dick was happiest when he was fixing things, whether it was a problem at the apartments, the boiler at church, helping a neighbor, or mentoring the grandchildren. Dick is survived by his wife, Beth, his older brother, Pat, his children, Donna, Tom, and Carol, and his grandchildren, Michael, Jennifer, jason, Kevin, Nicole, and Cameron. Contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church or to TRU Hospice, 2594 Trailridge Dr. East, Lafayette, CO 80026. A Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, November 29th at 11am at First United Methodist Church of Boulder, 1421 Spruce St., Boulder, CO 80302.

I am very sorry for my friends passing. Dick and I worked together at Arapaho Chemicals back in the 1970´s . Dick really enjoyed working and always did a great job . He was a very sincere inspiration for me when I was promoted to Environmental Chemist 50 years ago. He even offered my family a historical Boulder home that we were going to move and house my family. A great spirit

I will always think of Dick and smile! What a wonderful landlord, along with Beth and Grandma Hayward.

When I moved into the upstairs of the Mapleton Street carriage house in 1973-74, the first act of kindness Dick and Beth showed was to return the apartment number to it´s rightful cadence. I didn´t mind "14", but I wasn´t superstitious and "13" happened to be my favorite number. So I lived for years in Apt. 13 on 13th St., with 13 steps leading up to my front door.

Being there was extra special. So close to everything, I could walk-to Fred´s, Rocky Mountain Joe´s and the Good Earth; my bank; Ideal Market; Boulder Bookstore; and up Broadway hill to CU for work and class. And you couldn´t beat the rent!

The Haywards weren´t just landlords, they were "home". Whenever I ran into Beth, we´d stand awhile and talk. I´d visit with Dick´s mother, Bessie, in her apartment and it was like having my own grandmother there. I still have apple cider vinegar in my mix at breakfast and say, "finey fine", both of which I picked up from her. No wonder Dick turned out so well!

Doing laundry in the basement, I´d often run into Dick tinkering in his workshop. He always had good ears and lots of patience for listening. He´d make thoughtful comments and suggestions, always had a kind word, a hug, a silly joke to make you laugh. He was a humble soft-spoken man who took a keen interest in people and their well-being. He had a great heart.

I so appreciated him when I was going through my hard times, and I really missed him when I moved away and bought my own place. I´ve always known how blessed I was to have lived there and met him. I will always cherish the memories.

My prayers continue to be with you, Beth, and your family.

I remember visiting Dick on Dewey Street as a child growing up in Boulder. He always felt like a wise old grandfather figure to me and always had a positive outlook on life. I remember him introducing me to sourdough for the very first time. I am now a sourdough devotee and I'm grateful to have had that little gem of wisdom passed on from him to me.

I'm sorry to hear of his recent passing, but I know he lived a long life and positively affected many people.

Beth and Donna, Tom & Carol - our deepest sympathy on the passing of a great man. Dick made a lasting impression on our lives as he welcomed us at First Church. He could FIX ANYTHING! He also never sought praise; he was the silent Handyman-Angel. May you cherish all the good times and fun memories of Dick. Much love,

Dick was a wonderful landlord, and his mother was a lovely neighbor. My condolences to Beth and the rest of Dick's family. We were quite the group who lived at 13th and Mapleton in the late 70s, early 80s.
