Sheila Kava Obituary

Sheila Eagon Kava passed away peacefully in her home in Boulder, Colorado on November 20, 2023 surrounded by her family. Sheila was born in Madison, Wisconsin on April 18, 1936. She lived in Madison until she graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a Bachelor of Science in Education, where she was a member of the Delta Zeta sorority. She married Donald Joseph Kava on December 27, 1958 in Madison. Don and Sheila moved to Rochester, New York before moving to Colorado in 1962. Sheila taught second grade at Saint Louis Catholic School in Louisville, Colorado for 22 years. She was never happier than when she was teaching. She loved her students as much as they loved her. It was not a rare incident for her to run into a former student while shopping, which made her day. Sheila always said she was an Irish Setter, because she liked to sit. While sitting, she would read, crochet, and do crossword puzzles. She was a member of a ladies bridge group, (even though she despised playing cards) but, being surrounded by friends was more important than if she bid trump correctly. Sheila was a devoted Catholic, who faithfully attended mass 6 days a week. She spent countless hours volunteering as a Sunday school teacher, working at the Sister Carmen Center, serving on the church council, Assistant Scout Master, Bluebird troop leader, and doing whatever she could to support the church. Sheila was a charitable and generous soul who was loved and cherished by everyone she met. She never said an unkind word about anyone, and the world is a sadder place without her kind heart. Sheila is survived by her loving husband, Don, of almost 65 years, and their four children: Michael Kava of Louisville, Colorado, Mary Swett (Christian) of Olathe, Kansas, Laura Kava of Lenexa, Kansas, and Kathleen Kava of Broomfield, Colorado, six grandchildren: Austin Kava (Vanessa) of Monterey, California, Katherine Maudlin (Jason) of Westchester, Ohio, Michael Swett M.D. of Washington D.C., Thomas Kava Ph.D. candidate of Louisville, Colorado, Megan Abel of Washington D.C., and Steven Abel of Broomfield, Colorado, two great grandchildren: twins Teague and Primrose Maudlin of Westchester, Ohio. She was known to her grandchildren as being the best grandma in the world! In lieu of flowers, please send donations to St. Martins de Porres Catholic Church in Boulder Co. Services will be held in April of 2024.

MRS. Kava (I cringed when I was an adult and she told me to call her Sheila!) was our neighbor and mother to two of my best childhood friends. I remember sleepovers in the basement. Am I dreaming tomato soup and grilled cheese or was that real? She always made me feel welcome. Though our family moved, I have always had fond memories of Sheila and the Kava family. People grow apart but they leave a mark on your heart. My love to all of you!
