Shelby Wolf Obituary

Shelby Anne Wolf, born in Tallahassee, Florida on September 22, 1950, was a world traveler and Peace Corps Volunteer who lived in Japan, Tunisia, Bolivia, Saudi Arabia and across the USA, making Colorado her home for the last twenty years as a professor at the University of Colorado Boulder upon completing her Ph.D. at Stanford University in 1992. As a professor Shelby achieved great heights as a scholar at the University of Colorado, publishing The Braid of Literature, authored with Shirley Brice Heath, based on book-reading times with her daughters, Lindsey and Ashley. Shelby's research, which began while she was a doctoral student at Stanford, showcased her love of drama and provided deep insights about how the arts could expand a child's sense of self. Shelby also led the four-person team that edited the Handbook of Research on Children's and Young Adult Literature, a tour de force that brings together theoretical perspectives from multiple fields of scholarship. Shelby was also a much respected and revered teacher-of both first graders and graduate students. During her years teaching elementary school in international schools abroad and in the United States she was much loved by her young students and their parents. As a professor in the School of Education she was held in deep esteem by the over two thousand undergraduate and graduate students who had the pleasure of being in her company. In 2006, Shelby Wolf was named a University of Colorado President's Teaching Scholar. This designation is the University's highest recognition of excellence in teaching requiring exceptional contributions in research as well. Her most important accomplishment, however, was raising two beautiful daughters, Lindsey and Ashley, who will always remember the many hours of storybook reading and dramatic play that filled their childhoods. Shelby was always ready to lead the way in fanciful escapes from everyday life and let the "wild rumpus" begin. Shelby will be remembered as an adored teacher, gifted writer, dear friend, and much-loved mother. She gave much of herself to make life more loving and richer for everyone around her. Shelby is survived by her daughters, Lindsey Lunney and Ashley Wolf, son-in-law Grant Lunney, former husband Kenny Wolf, sisters Karen Hocking and Martha Bitar and their children, brother-in-law Bill Hocking, and her many students and friends, especially Shirley Brice Heath, Monette McIver, Donna Begley, Darcy Ballentine, and Dog Olivia. In Charlotte's Web, one of Shelby's favorite books, the narrator muses that "It's not often someone comes along who is a true friend and a good writer. [Shelby] was both." And much, much more. A Memorial Service will be held at the Flatirons Club in the Folsom Field Clubhouse on Sunday November 10th from 1:30-3:00pm to celebrate the beautiful life that was Once Upon a Time.

Shelby rekindled my love for children's literature with unabashed adult delight. She presented lessons and read literature in a theatrical, soothing, and wondrous way. I have carried this enthusiasm to my children, their children, and children in schools and other settings. Thank you Shelby, for "weaving the braid" of inspiration and mentorship.

I took Shelby's class when earning my masters in literacy at CU and she was, hands down, one of the best professors I've ever had. Her love for children's literature was contagious!

I was deeply saddened to learn of Mrs. Wolf's passing. She was my 3rd grade teacher in in 1985, Yanbu, Saudi Arabia. I am glad that I found her in 2007 and emailed her and let her know that she was my favorite teacher of all time. Even though it has been 30 years since I've seen her and 7 years since I corresponded with her, I will miss her.

I was deeply saddened to learn of Mrs Wolf's passing so suddenly. I will always remember Mrs Wolf as my 1st grade teacher in 1982, and my great surprise when she taught my 3rd grade in 1984. I remember her fondly and am extremely thankful that i was able to have her for two years as a teacher. I like to think about the many many students Mrs Wolf touched amongst the years and it gives me joy to think that the world is better for it. Thank you Mrs Wolf for all you have given us.

We will never know the number of fires Shelby Wolf's passion for learning, teaching and literature lit around the globe. For myself, Shelby played matchmaker for me. She introduced me to a great love: children's literature. I've carried a strong flame for it ever since. And as a professor, she always made you feel known and seen; like you were her only student. What a gift. She is missed.

I knew Shelby from 2003 when we first met in a small primary school in the UK where she persuaded me to become artist in residence. We then met regularly up until 2011 and collaborated on many things including a guide for teachers using galleries with Tate Modern. She was one of the most wonderful people I have ever met. My wife, Claire and I often called her our fairy Godmother because she brought so much wonder into our lives. We will miss her more than we can say. Our thoughts go to Lindsey and Ashley. God bless, xx

I was so shocked and saddened to hear that such a great light had gone out. Shelby has been my favorite professor and mentor; the one who daily reminds me of why I teach and how to teach -- with an eye always watching for beauty, a heart for human frailty, and a passion for art and poetry and laughter in this drama we will continue to play out without her. Thank you, Shelby, for your gifts of time and care to so many of us, and the mark you made on this world.

My fond memories of Shelby as a mentor and teacher of reading and literature will always bring a smile. Shelby's passion for great literature inspired teachers who continue to inspire their students and their own children. She leaves a wonderful legacy. Shelby lives on through all of us who are blessed to have known her and learned from her. This is a gift and treasure I have to hold onto forever in my heart.

Shelby held us all in her spell. I remember most her poetic language in everyday life and stories about her flower garden, especially early trials with delphiniums in our wind.

Shelby was such an amazing professor and I am so fortunate that I had the opportunity to take her class and learn from her. The most valuable thing she taught me was how to make my students love books. One of my favorite parts of her class was when she would read to us. I could listen to her read all day! She will be greatly missed.

Shelby was a gifted writer and reader, an amazing educator, and truly dedicated to the field of education, but more than that, she was a person of integrity and deep convictions. She will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her for the rest of our days.
