William Redak Obituary

On the evening of February 21st, 2023, William ("Bill") Redak Jr left us at age 80 after a long battle with lung cancer. Bill grew up in Albuquerque where he graduated from Highland High school in 1960. He attended the University of Colorado and the CU School of Law and began his legal career with Colorado Rural Legal Services (CRLS). His knowledge of law and caring demeanor provided a great service to many indigent clients in La Junta and Greeley. He later returned to the CU Law School as a staff attorney with the Legal Aid and Defender Program, instructing law students on real-life aspects of the practice of law. Later he started a small private practice working with two of his former law students from CU. His ethical and respectful manner of treating others is a gift that his law partners will long remember. Typically, Bill shunned being the center of attention, no matter how much he deserved it. Watching others succeed gave him much gratification. The explosion of personal computer technology in the 1980's, prompted Bill to teach himself software engineering. With his legal background and interest in personal computers he established Custom Legal Software and created multiple applications that helped set standards for the industry and are well known and still used today by attorneys, state and county judicial offices across the country. Over the years, Bill made friends with many different groups. He was diligent about staying in touch. Among them are fly fishing buddies from high school, friends from college, law school and his colleagues from CRLS days. More recently it was his Tuesday movie group and, of course, the golfing group, known collectively as The Doofus Guys. Most of all, no matter how they came to know Bill, his friends will miss his patience and legendary sense of humor. Bill will be a beautiful memory in the hearts of his daughter Jessica, his sons Stephen and Justin, his daughters in law, Yecenia and Elizabeth, his former wife and friend Connie, his five grandchildren Zack, Graham, Sandra, Noah and Zoe, his brother Rick and partner Kim, and their daughter Caitlin. He was preceded in death by his parents, William Sr. and Ann, and sister Nancy. Bill said he did not want a funeral service, hoping to avoid the spotlight to the end. Instead he just "wanted us all to get together". So, at a location and date to be announced later, we're just going to get together to celebrate his life. But don't be surprised if Bill is the center of attention, whether he wants to be or not.

I worked for Bill starting in 1979 when I was in high school up until about 1983 as a legal secretary. One of the smartest men I've ever known, I remember he had one of the first computers and when he started working on the software. Was thinking of him today and thought I would search to see what he was doing. Sad to see this and wanted to share the sentiment of everyone else, he was a great boss, great teacher and just a good human. Condolences to his family and friends.

Bill was part of our Peace corps training program in 1969 in east Los angeles for a program in Venezuela. Though bill did not end up going to south America, he made some deep connections with other trainees who he visited and treasured. In 2022, he co organized a reunion on zoom for 40 of us in that program. Reliving our memories of our youth together was much appreciated and his contribution was valued.
