Dwayne E. Welling, 93, of Addison, Somerset County, formerly a longtime resident of Connellsville, passed away peacefully Sunday. Aug. 21, 2016, at his home. He was born Nov. 5, 1922, in Connellsville, a son of the late Louis E. and Sarah Buttermore Welling. He attended the Connellsville public schools and graduated with the class of 1940. He attended Penn State University prior to enlisting in the U.S. Maritime Service, USNR during WW II. He served in all theaters of operations and was discharged in 1946. In addition to being awarded the various war zone bars and stars for those areas, he received the Patriotic War Victory Medal by the Russian Federation Government, for his convoy work to Murmansk, Russia. Dwayne was a lifelong member of the Wesley United Methodist Church in Connellsville. He was a member of King Solomon's Lodge #346 F&AM, the Royal Arch Chapter #283, the Uniontown Lodge of Perfection, the Consistory Valley of Pittsburgh, and the Syria Shrine. He was also a life member of the BPO Elks #503. Dwayne was a very active and dedicated Scouter. He served as Scoutmaster of Troop 2 of the Presbyterian Church, District Chairman of the Braddock Trails, and on the board of the Westmoreland Fayette Council of the Boy Scouts of America. He served as Lodge Advisor to Wagion Lodge #6, Order of the Arrow, and Regional Leader of Area 3-F. He served as Scoutmaster of Staff for five National Jamborees and was a contingent leader for Philmont. He was awarded the Silver Beaver, Thunderbird, and National Service Award for his endeavors. He also served the Confluence Troop 150 as Property Trustee.
In 1985, Dwayne retired from Bell Telephone of PA. as a Project Engineer after 35 years of employment. In 1987, he relocated to his Nine Gate Farm in Addison. He became active in community affairs and served as Borough Council President. He was Past Treasurer, member of the Addison Water Authority, co-founder and Past President of the Old Petersburg/Addison Historical Society, co-founder and Past Treasurer of the National Road Heritage Park, co-coordinator of the Addison and National Pike Festivals Committees, and Past President and Secretary of the Confluence Lions Club.
Dwayne will be sadly missed but fondly remembered by his loving family; his children, Deborah E. Barna and husband Joseph of Mooresville, NC., Dr. David K. Welling and wife Cheryl of Addison, Claudia L. Welling and husband Ken Sapos of Jefferson Hills, and Rebekah S. Hann and husband Thomas E. of Bullskin Township; his grandchildren, Joseph Barna III, Maryah Barna, Charlotte Leonhardt and husband Ben, John Barna, Leah Dickens and husband James Matthew, Mikel-Kristopher Welling and wife Angie, Megan Welling, Jennifer Welling, Alyssa Muto and husband Patrick, Gabrielle Carbonara, Seth Huber and wife Kristal, Blake Huber, Sarah Hann, and Thomas Hann Jr. and fiancee Abby Merendino.
Dwayne was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
In addition to his parents Dwayne was predeceased by his loving wife of 64 years, Charlotte Sue Driscoll Welling on Sept. 25, 2015; a son, Dwayne E. Welling Jr.; his daughters, Jennifer Welling and Leah Huber; his granddaughter Christina Carbonara; his sisters, Sarah Margaret Welling, Nellrose Schafner, Ruth Ella Core, Mary Virginia Welling, Doloris Zepa, Sarah Lee Welling, and Doris Irene Welling; and his brothers William E., Harry J., John O. , Gerald F., and Earl B. Welling.
Family and friends will be received Thursday from 2-9 p.m. in the BROOKS FUNERAL HOME INC., 111 E. Green St., Connellsville (724- 628-1430). Additional viewing will be held Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. and Saturday from 9 -11 a.m., the hour of a funeral service in the Addison United Methodist Church, 669 Main St. Addison, PA. 15411, with Pastor Sam McClintock officiating. A private committal service and interment, for the family will follow in the Normalville Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted at the cemetery by the Valley VFW #12019 Honor Guard. The Connellsville Elks #503 will conduct a service Thursday at 7 p.m. and King Solomon's Lodge #346 F&AM will conduct a service Thursday at 7:30 p.m., both in the funeral home. The Boy Scouts will conduct a service Friday at 6:30 p.m. and the Addison Lions Club will conduct a service at 7:30 p.m. Friday, both in the Addison U. M. Church.
