Gloria Norton, Woodland's Women's Athlete of the Millennium, died at St. John's-Stollwood Manor West at the age of 88 on Wednesday, June 8, 2011. She was born June 19, 1922, in Woodland. She lived in and loved Woodland all of her life. She was the daughter of Henry and Velma Jacobs, wife of Warren D. Norton Jr., mother of David and Jeffrey Norton, grandmother of Julie White (Jamie), Jacob Norton, Ardith Law (Howard) and Kara Norton; and the great-grandmother of James and Justin White. She loved time together with family and spending time with grandchildren.
Gloria began shooting varmints with her father and a .22 pistol at age 11. Through the years she held 13 shooting world records, becoming the most popular shooter in the nation in the 1930s and '40s. Gloria "faded out" her sharp shooting skills to raise her family. She loved her Woodland family, friends, golfing, duck and deer hunting and summer fun times at Bucks Lake.
She is survived by sons, David Norton (Sandy) of Incline Village, Nev., Jeffrey Norton of Robbins; three grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, Warren D. Norton; sister, Joann Jacobs; and her grandson, Jacob "Jake" Norton.
Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, June 25, at Mary's Cemetery, 12020 County Road 98, at the southwest corner of county roads 98 and 15. Her celebration of life will follow at St. Johns United Church's Social Hall, 434 Cleveland Ave., Woodland. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the National Rifle Association Foundation Endowment, 11250 Waples Mill Road, Fairfax, Va., 22030. This foundation is dedicated to youth scholarships.

My Mom, Rita Andrews, met Gloria when she moved to St. John's in 2003. They became fast friends, walking together to every meal and back from the cottages. They enjoyed sitting in the lobby, talking to and greeting those who entered. When Mom transferred to Manor West, she immediately recognized Gloria as someone she knew, and they renewed their friendship. I loved Gloria's stories about the "good old days," and the neighborhood where she grew up, including the Italian family who made chicken soup for them. Gloria and I liked to dance and joke with each other. She was a great lady in every sense of the word, and we will miss her presence dearly. -Karen Andrews, Davis

Gloria was such a humble and lovely person--quite elegant. I enjoyed talking with her and getting to know her a bit at Jacobs' family reunions held at the old Jacobs ranch.
With my sincere sympathy and that of my family.

My family met Gloria at St John's Manor East while visiting my mother there. She would often sit on the patio and visit with us and we thoroughly enjoyed her company and her stories about Woodland and its earlier times. Her memory of those times, places and events was truly remarkable. She was definitely an enjoyable person to be around.
May your happy memories help you through this trying time.
