Barbara Vosburgh Obituary

Barbara C. Kesicke Vosburgh, M.D. RED HOOK- Barbara C. Kesicke Vosburgh, M.D., 87, of Red Hook died on Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2013, at her home. Born on June 30, 1926 in Yonkers, she was the daughter of the late Frank E. and Constance Kesicke. Dr. Barbara graduated from Gorton High School in 1944, Cornell University with a B.A. and received her M.D. from New York Medical College in 1952. Barbara was an Anesthesiologist, serving as Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology at Greene County Memorial Hospital. She taught at Albany Medical College, served as Medical Consultant to Greene County Social Services, was a member of the Greene County Public Health Committee, and served as Greene County Coroner. Barbara was active in local organizations as well: she was the first woman elected to Coxsackie Village Office, serving on the Village Board and as acting Mayor. In addition to her medical and civic involvement, she was active in church and charitable organizations. She loved to sew and to quilt, making beautiful clothes and quilts for her children and grandchildren. Barbara was well known in the area as the “Corn Lady” at Kesicke Farm, where she shared stories with her customers, many of who came to visit her as much as to buy the sweet corn. She was the heart and soul of her extended family. Barbara was energetic, fun loving, funny and so much more … a doctor, a farmer, a storyteller, and a friend to all. She was pre-deceased by her husband John Vosburgh, whom she met over a cadaver in medical school and married on June 7, 1952 at St. Christopher's Church in Red Hook. They shared 61 years of marriage. Barbara is survived by six children: J. Paul (Brenda) Vosburgh of Red Hook, Andrew (Susan) Vosburgh of Royal Oak, Mich., Frank (Cathy) Vosburgh, Connie (Larry) Burud, AnnMarie (John) Vosburgh, and David (Jodi) Vosburgh all of Red Hook. She was pre-deceased by a brother Francis Kesicke. 16 grandchildren also survive: Elizabeth, Aaron, and Sarah Vosburgh, Michael Vosburgh and Kathryn (Chad) Stennett, Frankie (Jen), Steven (Heather), and Lisa Vosburgh, Shane (Anita) Burud, Kaitlin (Kyle) Leach, Travis, Makenzie and Ciara Burud, Alexis Howard, and Mackenzie and Cody Vosburgh, as well as five great-grandchildren: Madison and Ryan Vosburgh, Bryce and Brody Vosburgh and Cheyenne Jubin. Visitation will be held 4 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 22, 2013 at the Yadack-Fox Funeral Home, 209 Main Street, Germantown, N.Y. A Mass will be celebrated 10\ a.m. Monday Sept. 23, 2013 at St. Christopher's Church in Red Hook. Burial will follow in the St. Paul's Lutheran cemetery. For those who wish, memorial donations may be made to the John and Barbara Vosburgh Scholarship Fund, Red Hook Central School District, 9 Mill Road, Red Hook, N.Y., 12571. Aunt Barbara--strong, independent and feisty. Her gravelly voice told you like it was. She was talented and creative; her hair always in a bun! You will be greatly missed by your family but I hope you are at peace, with Uncle Doc once again.

I am so very sorry for the loss of Aunt Barbara, an extraordinary woman. She was the heart and soul of the Vosburgh family and a strong role model for all. Her humor and steel grace are many of the qualities that I admired in her. I see it has also been instilled in her children and grandchildren. My thoughts and prayers are with you in this difficult time.

Dr. Barbara Vosburgh had a powerful intellect, a sterling character and a wonderful, wry sense of humor. Importantly, she also had a kind and loving heart. She was special; a true friend to our family, as was Dr. John. They are both remembered as such, with love and appreciation.
Sincerely,
Maureen Longthon

I hold many fond memories of both your mom and dad from Greene county Memorial Hospital. my dad used to work in Albany and he would come home and tell us how Dr. Barbara was running late and putting on makeup while driving to Albany. She was a lady in every sense of the word. Our deepest sympathy on her passing.
