Bernard G. Matthews

KINGSTON- Bernard G. Matthews, 83, son of the late George D. and M. Regina (Smith) Matthews, died at Golden Hill Health and Rehabilitation Center on Aug. 11, 2021. He was a life-long resident of Kingston. He earned college degrees from St. Jerome College, Kitchner, Ont., Marist College and St. John's University. He spent many years as a teacher and administrator, including Coleman Catholic High School. Eventually, he left working in schools and opened a learning center in Kingston. Bernie also took an active part in local government, having served on many committees as well as holding the position of commissioner. He had a great knowledge of the Kingston Fire Department, having done extensive research over the years. The Volunteer Firemen's Hall and Museum held a special place in his life. He also spent many hours doing genealogical research on the Matthews-Eigo families which he shared with them. He is survived by his brother, Br. Joseph Matthews, FMS of Poughkeepsie; his niece, Katherine (Matthews) Robertson (Hugh); his nephew, Philip Matthews and his son Christopher of Dallas, Texas; as well as many cousins. His brother , George H. Matthews and his wife Alice, as well as his brother, Br. Jerome Matthews, CSC, predeceased him. Funeral arrangements are under the guidance of the Joseph V. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. at Saint Joseph's Church. Burial will follow in Saint Mary's Cemetery.
