George Markunas Obituary

George A. Markunas SAUGERTIES- George A. Markunas, 85, passed away Friday, May 20, 2011 at Golden Hill Health Care Center in Kingston. Born Sept. 6, 1925 in Brooklyn, he was the son of the late Joseph and Mary Simniskus Markunas and had resided in the area since 1956. Mr. Markunas was employed at IBM for 30 years, first as a tool and die maker and later a computer programmer, until his retirement. He was a member of the Quarter Century club and played on the IBM softball league. He was a veteran of WWII, serving in the Merchant Marine and the Korean Conflict, serving in the Airborne of the United States Army. He enjoyed golf and was devoted to his family. He was predeceased by his wife, Mary Regina Connaughton Markunas on April 28, 2004. He was also predeceased by his brother, Joseph Markunas. Surviving are two sons, Christopher G. of Philadelphia, Pa. and George P Markunas of Saugerties, two grandchildren, Melissa and Moira, and two nieces. Friends may call at Lasher Funeral Home, Inc., 100 Tinker St., Woodstock on Monday 3 to 7 p.m. The funeral procession will form 10:15 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, and at 11 a.m. a Mass of Christian Burial will be sung at St. John the Evangelist Church, Centerville. Burial with Military Honors, will be in Woodstock Cemetery. In lieu of flowers contributions to American Cancer Society, 95 Schwenk Dr., Kingston, NY 12401, would be appreciated.
