Rev. Hugh C. Whitaker SAUGERTIES - Rev. Hugh C. Whitaker, 90, of Rte. 212 died Monday, May 4, 2015 at the Northern Dutchess Hospital. Born December 11, 1924 in Saugerties he was the son of the late Edward and Evva Whitaker. A Veteran of World War II he fought in the European Theatre of Operations, participating in three major campaigns, D-Day Plus 2. He attended Wagner College in Staten Island where he received a BA degree. He received his Master of Divinity Degree from the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Philadelphia. He was ordained on June 8th, 1955 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in N.Y.C. He accepted a call to become Pastor of St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Oswego in 1955. While at Oswego Rev. Whitaker served on several committees including President of the Council of Churches. In 1967 he became the Pastor of Christ Lutheran Church in Little Falls, N.Y. Where he made an immediate impact serving as President of the Little Falls Ministerial Association. In 1978-1987 he became the Pastor at the Zion Lutheran Church in Athens. He retired back to his hometown in Saugerties where he was active in the Saugerties American Legion, VFW, Lions Club and the Centerville Fire Company. He also served as a Supply Pastor at the Ruby Lutheran Church. Survivors include his wife, Janice, with whom he recently celebrated his 65th Wedding Anniversary. One sister: Evva Burlingame of Mt. Vernon, Ohio and one grand daughter: Donna Whitaker and several nieces and nephews also survive. He was predeceased by sons, David and Philip, daughter, Shirley, and 5 brothers, Norman, Edmund, Orville, Charles and Albert. His Funeral Procession will form 9:15 a.m. Thursday thence to the Atonement Lutheran Church, Market St., Saugerties where at 10 a.m. his Funeral Service will be conducted. Friends will be received Wednesday 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m at Seamon-Wilsey Funeral Home, Inc., Cor. of John & Lafayette Streets, Saugerties.Interment will be in the Blue Mt. Cemetery.
