Malcolm Sanborn Obituary

Malcolm Austin Sanborn Bensalem, Pa.- Malcolm Austin Sanborn of Bensalem, Pa., and formerly of Kingston, N.Y., and Merrimack, N.H., passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 30, 2019, with Anne Brown Sanborn, his wife of 69 years, at his side. He was 92. Malcolm was born in 1927 to Hobart and Erma Austin Sanborn in Laconia, N.H. After serving in the Navy during World War II, he earned his bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute; he also earned master’s degrees from the University of Virginia and Syracuse University. He enjoyed a 35-year career as a senior systems engineer at IBM, holding some three dozen patents for innovations in his field. He was honored by IBM for his work with robotics in computer chip manufacturing. Malcolm loved his home and his family and was completely devoted to his wife Anne. As a young man he explored the mountains of New Hampshire and Maine and the New England seacoast before settling in New York’s Hudson Valley. His family will remember him for sharing his love of the outdoors, sailing, music, home improvement projects, woodworking, family history, and continuing the Sanborn family tradition of extensive vegetable gardening. He was a talented carpenter as well as an engineer, and he and Anne built their home near Kingston, N.Y., where they lived for many years before retiring to Merrimack, N.H. Malcolm and Anne moved to Juniper Village in Bensalem in 2013. In addition to his wife, Malcolm leaves behind his children, Margaret Sanborn (Carolyn Lyday), of Langhorne, Pa., Peter Sanborn (Yvette) of Nashua, N.H., Vincent Sanborn (Shari Stahl) of Accord, N.Y., and Ted Sanborn (Gene Fett), of Phoenix, Ariz. Also surviving are his brothers, Russell and Lawrence; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Malcolm was preceded in death by his son, John A. Sanborn, and his brother, Gordon Sanborn. Relatives and friends are invited to greet the family on Thursday, May 2, 2019, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Joseph A. Fluehr III Funeral Home, 800 Newtown-Richboro Rd.
