Michael Weisbrot Obituary

Michael Weisbrot LOMONTVILLE - Michael Weisbrot of Lomontville celebrated 70 year of love, laughter and high adventure before leaving us on April 19th, 2014. He was a husband and life partner to Marilyn Mitchell for 40 years, an uncle, a brother, a cherished friend to so many and above all a father to Josh and Lila. He was a photographer, a writer, a teacher, a fisherman, an artist, a mechanic, a builder and much more. He played the drums and his life was a poem to a different beat. He was totally creative and original in almost everything he approached. He kept his succession of Saabs on the road with his ingenuity at times manufacturing his own parts. He drove them because they were safe and protected his family. Michael was the ultimate family man. He loved his children with a passion and although a man of peace, would have fought an army single handed if they were threatened. He was a Dad to not just his own but to all of us. He insisted you buckle your seat belt and lock those doors before leaving his domain. His life’s work was attaining the level of a Master photographer. His unique view of this world generated images that would often evoke powerful emotion. His lens was his soul and when he snapped the shutter something remarkable was recorded for history. His genius was his perception about people. Family photography his specialty. He understood and cared deeply about people and could zero into the essence of the human condition. He captured all phases of life from birth, marriage and death itself. His subjects crossed all lines and encompassed the downtrodden to celebrity. His work has been published in books, magazines, and on display at numerous Galleries. He taught photography in the Rondout Valley Schools and really enjoyed working with children and awakening their sense of positive self image through photographs. His favorite expression was, “It is all about the children and the work” His life will be honored at a future time to be announced.

Michael was there to photograph the home birth of our first child. Well, after 24 hours of labor, we decided to go to our local hospital for a shot of Pitocin, along with our entourage. Michael got the first shot of our beloved daughter Chloe after waiting briefly in the hall of the delivery room, where he heard the nurses talking about our drive by birthing, saying "Give her whatever Eva wants". Just wanted to borrow the doctors' shower while Lock held the baby and then home.
Thanks for sharing our day with us Michael!

May his memory be a blessing to you.
We remember Michael and Marilyn visiting Lock's farm in the northern Catskill mountains. Our children Chloe and Skye Lee still own the subsistence farm there where they were born and raised in the one room schoolhouse. Lock dies on Memorial Day 2021, just three months after my husband Lawrence, who left his home schooling business Oak Meadow to our kids, Chloe and Skye Lee.

Dear Marilyn, Josh and Lila, You may not remember us, but M&M kept a caravan on our upper land on the farm in Walton NY where they came and went as they wished from their home in Lomontville. Little did I know how precious our times together were to be. They were so flowing and free with each other and later with their children. Michael attended both our kids (24 hour) home births, which ended up in the local hospital for a shot of Pitocin (should have asked our vet). He was so unobtrusive and yet stayed with us to capture the moments of first life - the first hand out, the first wide open eyes, in B&W photos. What a treasure the are still - those kids have their own kids now. Just wanted you to know how much we loved you M&M. Those precious memories are with us still. And with the ones they nourish - seen and unseen. Blessings and love to you. Eva

Dear Michael, Marilyn, Josh and Lila, Just so stunned about all this, as you must be. Of course, we got the very unique connection with your family, noodling around the hills and dales at the farm in trout creek, cooking and eating together - the most profoundly simple of things - things that seem they will last forever. Nothing needed to be said - we stirred our light together and now we carry his on. He will be missed by so many; I just know he's smiling on. . . what a profoundly kind person - did we mention gentle, creative and fun? You are loved and missed. Eva, Chloe and Skye

In addition to the love, joy, and insight that was always Michael, I'll never forget the first time I met him, at a meeting when he was giving the school board hell many years ago in his calm but very convicted way. A sweet hero.

Dearest Marilyn, Josh and Lila, I just read this, although have been in touch before, just want to write here again, how much my heart is with you, Shelia, Perry and Robin. I'm sitting here 'thinking of profound words' to add... but won't. Just a very sincere hug and very sincere love. Joan

Marilyn, so sorry to hear of Michael's passing. He was a unique person, a gentle and sweet soul. My kids all enjoyed having him take their school photos at High Meadow. He will be missed.
