Robert Stubbs Obituary

CLEARWATER, FL- Robert D. Stubbs, 88, of Clearwater, FL, passed away Thursday, April 15, 2021, at Suncoast Hospice Center in Clearwater, FL.He was married to Cynthia (Willcox) Stubbs. He was born on Feb. 18, 1933 in Auburn, NY Robert (Bob) received his Bachelor of Science degree in Recreation from the State University of New York (SUNY) at Cortland.While studying at Cortland, he became interested in the United States Marine Corps. After six months in Quantico, VA, he went to Camp Lejeune, NC. He was promoted to 1st Lieutenant and assigned Company Executive Officer. His unit employed helicopters to surprise the enemy- a military operation used extensively in Vietnam. In 1956, Bob was deployed to Egypt's Sinai Peninsula. He finished his military service in 1962, promoted to captain and was assigned to the Reserve Force. Following active duty, Bob began a 31 year career with the YMCA.He served in Syracuse, NY, and Washington, D.C., before becoming General Director of the YMCA of Kingston and Ulster County, NY, where he served for 27 years. He began his career at the YMCA in Kingston in 1966, arriving at a time when the YMCA was physically and functionally struggling. Through his diligent adherence to the principles and ideals of the YMCA, Bob led the Association through an extraordinary expansion of programs for youth, families, adults, senior citizens, and the physically challenged. Bob retired in 1993.During his years in Kingston, Bob was a member of Fair Street Reformed Church where he served on consistory, a member and past president of the Kiwanis Club and past president of the Kingston Hospital board. Bob enjoyed vacationing in the Adirondack Mountains of New York from 1966 to the present.He loved fishing, boating, hiking, waterskiing, swimming, sports, playing golf, singing in choirs and barbershop quartets, and pulling out his ukulele and singing some good old tunes.Bob is survived by his wife, Cynthia (Willcox) Stubbs of Cortland, NY; his daughter, Robyn Zimmerman and her husband Wayne of Kingston, NY; his son, Robert D. Stubbs, II, and his wife Sylvia of Lewes, DE; and his daughter, Holly Andrade and her husband Ed of Largo, FL. Bob is survived by his grandchildren, Carrie, Andrew, Joy, Erica, Robert D. Stubbs III (Robbie), Andrea, Kolbe, Anna, Daniel, Peter and John Paul; great-grandchildren, Lucas, Emma, Sophia, Ahnna, and Josephine; as well as nieces, nephews, and many loving friends.Bob is preceded in death by his wife, Dariel, parents, William and Enid Stubbs, brother, William Stubbs and sister, Jean Hemans.Expressions of sympathy may be made in the form of contributions to: "The YMCA of Kingston Pledged Endowment Fund." https://www.lastingmemories.com/robert-d-stubbs

So sorry to hear about Bob's passing. We spent many a great time with Bob and Cynthia at their beautiful Adirondack home as well as some great golf games and after parties in Aiken. Bob was a true gentleman and man of character. God bless and may you find comfort in knowing he was loved and appreciated by many. Love Ron & Sandee
